When you absolutely must be seen, use a really big light!

This photo from our archives was taken in April of 1925. The giant lantern was a new floodlight meant for airports, which were only a couple decades old at the time. The shape of the glass is called a Fresnel lens, which was used in lighthouses to make them easier to see. Instead of the light inside going out equally in all directions, the glass directs more of the light outward where engineers need it to be.

Our optical illusions and fun exhibit Eye Candy is coming to a close in a couple weeks, so make sure you get a chance to do a bit of your own optical engineering at the science museum!

One of the most fun parts of miSci's archives for us to comb through are the films!

Today we bring you footage of a helicopter flight at the dedication of the General Electric Flight Test Center in 1946. You can still see the hangar at the Schenectady County Airport- it's the location of our friends at the Aerosciences Museum. There's more to this film too- we'll edit a few more up to post in the future.

The helicopter looks like a Sikorsky R-5; not sure exactly which variant- any idea ?
