Tonight we have a partial lunar eclipse to view!

Lunar eclipses happen when the Moon moves into the Earth’s shadow, turning more red the more “total” the eclipse. This eclipse the moon will be largely covered from Schenectady’s point of view. The darker part of Earth's shadow will begin covering the moon tonight at 10:34. It will reach peak coverage at 12:13 AM and then the moon will start to move out of the shadow—totally leaving the umbra at 1:52 AM.

Not as common now due to overfishing, the Sturgeon used to be an important food source for those living around the Great Lakes—a food source that was most plentiful during the month of August. These fish could get as big as a car and live up to 150 years.

Other August moon names might be more relevant to you—including the Corn Moon (Algonquin, Ojibwe) and the Cree’s Flying Up Moon, for when many young birds learn to fly.

The miSci Team & Trustees recently had the opportunity to tour GE! 💡⚡️

They got an inside look at the innovation, technology, and history that has helped shape our Capital Region and beyond! We’re grateful for the chance to connect, learn, and celebrate the incredible work happening, just down the road from the museum.

Thank you to GE Vernova and Dave Mains making this possible. ⚙️

Tonight's the night!

The Perseids meteor shower is one of the most reliable shooting star shows that we get- this year it lasts from 7/17-8/24, but tonight is the PEAK!

In perfect viewing skies 50-100 shooting stars are visible the night the Perseids peak- and with the new moon tonight the darker skies should be great for viewing even faint meteors.

There are meteor shower events happening around the Capital Region, but if you can't make it to one just get to the darkest sky you can find, give your eyes a few minutes to adjust, and look up! đź’«đź‘€
