Hurricane Alicia — Who Remembers?
August 18, 1983
Hurricane Alicia is a storm many in our area will never forget. After strengthening on August 17, Alicia reached Category 3 status as it made landfall on the southwestern end of Galveston Island. The eye passed just west of Downtown Houston, bringing powerful winds, heavy rain, and widespread damage across the region.
The impact was so severe that the name Alicia was officially retired in 1984 by the World Meteorological Organization — never to be used again for an Atlantic hurricane.
A moment in our Santa Fe, Tx history that still echoes today.
