American Oyster Catcher (banded) - Galveston Island, Texas, USA -Apr. '26

This beautiful bird was photographed while I was scouting locations for my photographic leadership role in our local birding festival. It was strolling near the shoreline and I anticipated this takeoff. I don't have specific information from the bands yet. However, I know the top bands are an individual identifiers and the silver band has tagging and tracking info. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS, , 1/3200, F/9.0, ISO 1250.

PS: I have more info: This bird was banded by Gulf Coast Bird Observatory in 2014.

Brown Pelican - Galveston Island, Texas, USA - Apr. '26
This image was captured while I was in a volunteer leadership role for our local birding festival. We were scouting by boat in and along the Inter Coastal Waterway (ICW) on the north side of the Island. This Brown Pelican had just landed but continued to display its incredible wing span for us. There were a large number of nesting Brown Pelicans this spring. All of them were displaying, nesting, or already rearing young chicks. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS @343 mm, 1/3200, f/9.0, ISO 4000.

Great Blue Heron - Galveston Island, Texas, USA - Apr. '26
This image is another from a scouting boat trip I did in and along the Inter Coastal Waterway (ICW) just North of Galveston Island. This "Great" had the fish (look close) in its mouth and dropped it, I think, as it tried to reposition it to swallow. It was not very happy about the loss and by the next frame the fish was gone. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS @ 500mm, f/9.0 1/3200, ISO 4000. See less

Reddish Egret - Galveston, Texas, USA - Apr. '26

I was a trip leader on a chartered boat photography field trip to the islands along the Inter Coastal Waterway (ICW) when I caught the Reddish in flight. Springtime's breeding season always brings out the best dressed version of all of our shorebirds and waders. This one is no exception. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS @ 343mm, f/9.0, 1/3200, ISO 5000.

Brown Pelican - Galveston Island, Texas, USA - Apr. '26

And now for something completely different, here is a Brown Pelican in black and white. I was fortunate enough to capture this "Brown" during a running takeoff. The light was so very low and dull that I went back to my roots and developed this one in B&W. I nearly never use B&W for wildlife but this one seems to work well in view of the awful light that day. I photographed it during a chartered boat event I was leading just North of the Island along the Inter Coastal Waterway (ICW). Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS @ 500mm, f/9.0, 1/2500, ISO 4000.

American Oyster Catcher - Galveston Island, Texas, USA - Apr. '26
This was the lone "catcher" I found to photograph from a chartered boat trip I attended. The banding was a bonus and will net great info on this specific bird when I submit to the feds. It's interesting that we saw the same banded bird in several places we visited during the event. The unique band made it easy. I love the direct eye contact that is one of my primary goals for birds and really, all wildlife photography. I hope you enjoy. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS , f/9.0, 1/3200, ISO 2500.

Tricolored Heron - Galveston Island, Texas, USA - Apr. '26

I was on a chartered boat trip to photograph breeding and nesting shorebirds. At one location, I saw more Tricolored Herons than I think I had ever seen in one place. The were in full breeding plumage, courting, mating and just being beautiful. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS, @ 500mm, f/7.1, 1/3200, ISO 5000

Brown Pelicans and hatchling - Galveston Island, Texas USA - Apr. '26

I don't often see what I assume to be both parents caring for a fledgling. This pair had a nest full of hatchlings and the care was there. The photograph was captured while on a chartered trip through a local birding festival. It you wonder about my high shutter speed, I have found shooting from a moving boat, with a handheld or monopod mounted camera, at a moving target just demands it. For me it consistently nets much sharper images. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS @ 167mm, f/8.0, 1/3200, ISO 1600.

Brown Pelicans - Galveston Island, Texas, USA - Apr. '26

This pair was side by side but I am not sure if they are a mated pair or if there was a second nest. One of my other frames shows an egg closer to the second bird. The light was low and overcast. In any case I like this image. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS , f/8.0, 1/2500, ISO 1600.
