American Alligator (Juvenile) - Brazoria NWR, Freeport, Texas, USA - Sept. '26

This tiny gator was about 18" long, so very young. As is often the case, my fellow photographer Cecil, spotted this one first. Even with his direction, it took me a minute to find it from my position on the boardwalk directly overhead. Even at this young age, extreme stillness and camouflage is innate in this species. To those who may wonder at the quality and capability of the RF 200-800 lens, it is by far the sharpest most versatile lens of all but my RF 100-500 L zoom. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Black-necked Stilts - Brazoria NWR, Freeport, Texas, USA - Sept. 26
What do you find when you have great numbers of birds in a shallow pond? Cast eye to the left of the frame for your answer. Alligators are nothing if not patient. They were their by the dozens. We saw several "explosions" as one tried for a wader. We could never confirm a catch though. The Stilts are one of my favorite waders to photograph. Their darks make it hard to even see their eyes against the feathers around their eyes. Their whites just pop off the frame. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS @ 400mm, f/7.1, 1/1600, ISO 2500.

Black Skimmer - Brazoria NWR - Freeport, TX, USA - Sept. 2026

I went to the refuge with my fellow photographer, Cecil in hopes of capturing some images of the Wood Storks that migrate through here. We saw no storks. However, the Black Skimmers were there in abundance, doing what the do, skimming and flaring to make another pass. The reeds were just far enough back to add an artistic touch of blur and color to the photograph. These birds are amazing aerial acrobats. Black Necked Stilts - Jocelyn Nungaray NWR, Anahuac, Texas, USA - Aug. '26

In this photograph you can see the difference between the adult bird on the left and the two juveniles with their brown backs on the right. I saw the natural framing as soon as we approached the birds. My friend Cecil eased the truck to just the right position for me to get them "in the frame." Eastern Pondhawk (male) - Brazoria NWR, Freeport, Texas, USA - Sept '26

Today we look at one of our common cold blooded flyers, a male Eastern Pondhawk. I tried to get you all a "hawk in flight," but I'll need more practice for that, don't ya know. Least Bittern (juvenile) - Brazoria NWR, Freeport, Texas, USA - Sept. '26

I was on of my many photographic field trips with my friend and fellow photographer, Cecil, when his great eye for birds spotted this juvenile Least Bittern hiding in the reeds. This is one of their very favorite micro habitats in the marsh. I just love the light and the peacefulness of this photograph. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS @ 432mm, 1/2000, f.7,1, ISO 10000.

Reflection of Roseate - Brazoria NWR, Freeport, Texas, USA - Sept. '26

I'm a sucker for reflections. This Roseate seems to be talking to the world. I surmise this one is a young bird. I've never seen such brilliant scarlet red just beginning to appear on the wings. I love Brazoria NWR. It is close to my home and one never knows what birds will be there or what their behavior might be. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS @ 400mm, 1/4000, f/7.1, ISO 2500.

Black Skimmer (juvenile) - Brazoria NWR, Freeport, Texas, USA - Sept. '26

This is perhaps my favorite image from around 600 or so photos I shot of Black Skimmers the other week at the refuge. The "tell" for this juvenile is that it's head is mottled and has some white fringe mid-wing. I don't usually crop in portrait orientation but this just looked like the perfect magazine cover and I liked it. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS @ 200mm, 1/1250, f/6.3, ISO 3200. I hope it brings some beauty into your Sunday morning.

Black Skimmer - Brazoria NWR, Freeport, TX, USA - Sept. '26

I heard several photographer friends say that they came to the refuge to photograph Wood Storks and stayed for the Skimmers. These are the only bird here in America with a longer lower jaw or mandible. They fly right at water level, dip the lower jaw in the water skimming and are reactive enough to feel a fish and sn**ch it out of the water at speed. They are fast. We see breakfast in this one's bill. Canon EOS R5, Cannon RF 200-800 IS @ 200 mm, 1/4000, f/6.3, ISO 10000.

Black Skimmer - Brazoria NWR, Freeport, TX, USA - Sept '26

I went to the refuge in search of the many Wood Storks reported, only to find Black Skimmers in abundance and no Storks. The light was low, soft, and dull. This Skimmer had just sn**ched a fish from the water. They drop their longer lower jaw or mandible in the water and "skim." When they feel prey the heads goes very quickly down and backwards to sn**ch the prey. We see this bird just recovering from that move bringing it's head back forward with a fish. This is not a real showpiece but, given the conditions, I still like it. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS @ 200mm, 1/4000, f/6.3, ISO 10000.
