The Pier 70 Time Machine is Opening Its Doors!

🚢⚙️Join us next weekend—September 11, 12, and 13, 2026—for the official Grand Opening of the Pier 70 Time Machine in historic Building 12 (Suite 2.35) at Pier 70! Brought to you by a 50/50 partnership between the Bethlehem Shipyard Museum and the Potrero Hill Archives Project, our new space celebrates the gritty, vibrant legacy of San Francisco’s industrial neighborhoods of Potrero Hill and Dogpatch.

Step inside and explore hundreds of primary artifacts, the 24-foot 10,000-Year History Wall, the Ramaytush Ohlone Cultural Display, Life and Death on Irish Hill, the Bob Hayes Photographic Retrospective, and deep archives honoring Union Iron Works, Bethlehem Steel and the neighborhood. Come stand where history was made and help us keep these stories alive for the community! Free and open to all.

FIRST LOOK EVENT!
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our exclusive open-house preview event yesterday.
While we are not quite ready for our Grand Opening, our "First Look" event provided a behind-the-scenes peak at what is to come. We were thrilled by the incredible turnout and the wonderful response to our brand-new 4,200-square-foot exhibition space inside historic Building 12 (Suite 2.35) at Pier 70. Seeing the community come together to explore the maritime, industrial, and neighborhood history of San Francisco’s southeastern waterfront made the hard work of moving in this spring completely worth it.
It was an honor to share the stories of Potrero Hill, Dogpatch, and Pier 70 with you all. This event was just the beginning; please stay tuned for updates regarding our official Grand Opening and upcoming programming.

Exciting things are on the horizon!

We had an extremely productive meeting with Dr. Beverly Ortiz and Greg Castro to discuss jointly creating an exhibit about the Ramaytush Ohlone Indian Tribe. The neighborhood's original inhabitants.

While nothing is officially scheduled and the finer details are still being worked out, we are absolutely thrilled to have reached a meeting of the minds. Bringing this vision to life alongside such incredible partners will be truly special.

We are thrilled to announce a new addition to our exhibits: a detailed model of the Rainier Brewing Company. Peter Linenthal and William Sander recently polished the details of this extraordinary piece of craftsmanship, which captures a unique slice of industrial history. It will soon be ready for its official public debut.

Huge Shoutout to a Longtime Friend!
We are sending a massive THANK YOU to Bob Reed for his incredible generosity! Bob recently designed and paid for over 70 t-shirts for our organization.
For those who don’t know, Bob has a deep history with our waterfront—he served as the former Head of Security for Bethlehem Steel’s San Francisco shipyard. Having a piece of that local legacy support our mission means the world to us. These items will go a long way in supporting our upcoming programs.

We hope to include the Rainier Brewery model, illustrated below, in our neighborhood collection. It will complement seats from Seals Stadium and a variety of other notable artifacts from this iconic area. Here is a brief history of the brewery.

While the Rainier brand is a Pacific Northwest icon, San Francisco became its primary home for decades due to an early onset of Prohibition in Washington state. In 1915, the brewery moved its headquarters to a massive brick complex at Bryant and 10th Streets—originally the Milwaukee Brewery—where it churned out its signature l***r for the thirsty California market. The facility was a marvel of industrial architecture, famously crowned by a giant, neon-red "R" that served as a glowing beacon for the Mission District. Although the vats were eventually decommissioned in the mid-1950s as production shifted back north, the building remains one of the city's most recognizable industrial landmarks, now repurposed as a vibrant hub for artist studios and creative offices.
