Join UMOCA and The Blocks Arts District for Sculptures at the Art Garten: A Reception with Michael Whiting this Thursday, June 18, 5–8 pm at The Art Garten (148 S. Main Street).

Celebrate the installation of Michael Whiting’s pixel-inspired sculptures in downtown Salt Lake City and hear from the artist on site.

Enjoy live music, a beer garden, lawn games, and an evening of art in the city’s newest outdoor gathering space.

This past weekend, we gathered for the UMOCA 2026 Gala: Acid West—an evening of western glamour, contemporary art, and spirited celebration in support of the museum’s exhibitions and education programs.

This year’s theme, inspired by the exhibition Altered States in the Acid West, refracted the West through glitter and grit—drawing on the legacy of Acid Western cinema from the 1960s and ’70s.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us for the evening, including artists, supporters, and friends of the museum, and to the many artists whose work was generously donated to the live and silent auctions.

Applications are now open for the 2026–2027 Assemblage Art Fund grant cycle.

The Assemblage Art Fund supports visual artists and collectives in Salt Lake County developing new, experimental, and collaborative projects that engage diverse audiences. Each year, 6–12 artists receive project-based grants ranging from $5,000–$10,000, selected by a rotating jury of local, regional, and national arts professionals.

We’re hiring!

UMOCA is seeking an Education Coordinator to join our Education team and help bring contemporary art directly to students across Utah.

This full-time role supports our K–12 programs—most notably the Art Truck, UMOCA’s traveling exhibition that visits schools statewide. The Education Coordinator will help coordinate school visits, teach on the Art Truck, and lead field trips and classroom-based learning experiences.

This is a hands-on teaching position that combines education, logistics, and public engagement. You’ll spend time in schools across the state, helping students connect with contemporary art in meaningful and accessible ways.

Details:

Full-time (up to 40 hours/week)
$19–$22/hour
Benefits include medical, dental, life, disability, retirement (401k), parental leave, and paid personal leave
Reports to Alison Neville, K–12 Education Manager

Key responsibilities include:
• Coordinating Art Truck visits with schools
• Driving and operating the Art Truck statewide
• Teaching K–12 students inside the Art Truck and in classrooms
• Leading field trips and education studio activities
• Supporting communication with teachers and school partners
• Maintaining exhibition knowledge and supporting student engagement

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in arts or education-related field preferred
• Experience teaching children
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass background check
• Comfortable with physical, hands-on work in and around the Art Truck
• Spanish language proficiency preferred

We’re back from Fieldworks: Canyonlands with full sketchbooks, new ideas, and a deep appreciation for the artists, educators, scientists, and cultural leaders who made this year’s residency such a meaningful experience.

Over five days at the Canyonlands Research Center, a cohort of regional artists gathered to explore the intersections of art, ecology, land stewardship, history, and place. Through workshops on papermaking from invasive plant species, natural pigments, desert ecology, Indigenous perspectives on Bears Ears, writing, and land-based practice, participants engaged with the Colorado Plateau as both a site of learning and creative inquiry.

Fieldworks is grounded in the belief that contemporary art can open new ways of understanding the landscapes we inhabit. This year's program fostered thoughtful conversations, meaningful connections, and time for reflection, experimentation, and making.

Thank you to Public Programs Strategist Roxanne Gray for thoughtfully shaping this year's program, to our partners at The Nature Conservancy's Canyonlands Research Center, and to all of the presenters and participating artists who shared their knowledge, curiosity, and generosity throughout the week.
