UMOCA has teamed up with the_openroom to organize the exhibition Please Touch The Art. The exhibition showcases the work of twelve national and international artists who use various processes, materials, and media to explore the ideas of a Post-Internet art practice.

An interactive performance will take place on Saturday, July 18, 2020 from 8:30-10:30 pm in the courtyard adjacent to the museum. Join us as collaborators in reworking and augmenting the selected artworks in real-time using digital editing tools located on-site. Keyboards, mouse, and tablets will be sanitized between uses, and masks are required at the event. We will be limiting attendance in the courtyard to 30 visitors at a time to encourage safe social distancing. Artist Marisa Olson, who is credited with coining the phrase "Post-Internet Art," will join virtually for a video chat at 8:30 pm to kick the event off. See you there!

06/24/2020

We are planning to reopen the museum July 15 with safety measures in place to protect our guests, staff, and the general public. This is, of course, contingent upon developments in the pandemic and local and state government response and regulation. When we do reopen we'll have a new exhibition in our Street Gallery that we look forward to sharing with you all!

Every three-and-a half years the editors of 15 Bytes: Artists of Utah organize a juried exhibition of 35 Utah artists under the age of 35 at the Art Barn—an art space run by the Salt Lake Arts Council that once was a previous home of UMOCA. Juried by Artists of Utah board members, the exhibition functions as a snapshot of Utah makers, providing a glimpse of artwork now as well as a foretelling of what’s to come.

However, 35 x 35 was never seen as a result of COVID closures.

From Before to Now draws on, but does not, simply reproduce the original exhibition. Rather, the reimagined exhibition poses the following question to the artists involved:

How has the quarantine changed the way you think about and make art now? What does your work look like now?

In a sense, the exhibition questions the intent of the original exhibition: can providing a survey of what’s happening now really be a prediction of the future? Life imprints itself on its makers and world events, such as the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting fear, isolation, and quarantine as well as mass protests in reaction to police violence and racial injustice have ramifications that can generate a shift in an artist’s practice—in both seismic and subtle ways.

As we work towards reopening in mid-July (exact date TBA), we want to share some of the upcoming programming you can expect on your next visit to the museum. The second installment of The Pan-American Identity Project in the Codec Gallery focuses on the work of Guatemala-based artist Regina José Galindo. Her practice is part-performance, part-political protest and reflects on the lack of justice in Guatemala for indigenous populations who experienced racially motivated genocidal massacre at the hands of a corrupt government.
.
.
In Bandera Negra, Galindo waves a black and white reproduction of the Guatemalan flag during an Independence Day parade in the famed tourist city of Antigua, Guatemala. Galindo’s Guatemalan flag—drained of its nationalistic colors and draped in the color of mourning—creates a new symbol of a nation, where one must face the harsh realities and atrocities of state-sanctioned violence.

We’re excited to announce that UMOCA will be reopening in mid-July. The world has changed since we closed our doors in March. We, like many institutions, have been hard hit by keeping our doors closed for so long, but we’ve used this time to reflect on who we are as an institution and who we want to be moving forward. Art has the unique ability to add meaning to a world that is often chaotic and violent. This is something we at UMOCA firmly believe, and this simple truth seems more self-evident than ever amid a global pandemic and perpetual social injustice. Our job as an arts institution is to provide space and support for the artists who produce this meaning.
.
.
As we prepare to reopen our doors, we want to reflect on some of the programming that we are excited to share with you in person. Pictured here is a work by the @GuerrillaGirls on display in the Main Gallery Presented by Diane & Sam Stewart.

Revel in today's copy and paste culture and quick reply repeat tendencies to manipulate the art past original conception. Where many original ideas end with expectations, we champion those who ask additional questions and push beyond the rules that surround typical shows. Join us for a revolutionary exhibition with an exceptional conceptual museum that will cause inspiration, confusion, and inquiry as what we consider work in the most transparent definition.

The_Openroom x UMOCA Open Call

During the museum's closure we're partnering with Salt Lake City-based arts space @the_openroom to organize an online exhibition that examines how participation in internet-based culture through networked technologies has changed artistic production, yielding distinctive approaches to art-making. The work will be exhibited both online via the UMOCA’s website as well as The_Openroom’s website. There will also be a performance on June 19th with the members of the_openroom and the general public outside in the UMOCA’s courtyard. We'll be posting content that the_openroom has created here over the next few weeks. Keep an eye out for these for more information.

Submission deadline June 7th, exhibition opening June 12th, 2020. / Visit tinyurl.com/yczlr2uz for more information and submission guidelines.

We’re beyond excited to partner with the UMOCA for our first net inspired exhibition, bridging the gaps of typical museum policies and expectations.

05/08/2020

During our temporary closure, we’ve partnered with Utah-based poet, artist, sonosopher, and scholar Alex Caldiero to share a series of poems and drawings from his book Poetry is Wanted Here—a collection written in response to the 9/11 attack. Such writing feels fitting and current all the more now as we share and seek ways to heal, bounded by separate walls, in this collective trauma. For us we hope it will be a source of comfort and will help put words and clarity to all that we are experiencing together.

If you happen to be driving down West Temple, you can see one of Caldiero's poems installed on banners in front of the museum. Have a safe and healthy weekend everyone!

In light of recent coronavirus regulations, I’m happy to see that you all are able to find a positive aspect in the situation by providing the community with 360 virtual experiences! If anyone is interested, I thought I’d share my newfound entertainment method - Film Festival Flix. It’s a streaming platform I just discovered with tons of diverse film festival films. I love how it offers a virtual film festival experience and allows you to curate your own line-up. My latest watch was an eye-opening documentary called ‘More Than Honey’ that confronts the vexing issue of why bees are facing worldwide extinction. This site has definitely been keeping me sane these past few weeks and I highly suggest browsing the channels on their site!
