The Pan-American Identity Project video series will highlight three artists from different countries along the Pan-American Highway. The series will start off with the work of Adrian Stimson, a two-spirit member of the Siksika (Blackfoot) Nation from Alberta, Canada.

Stimson’s work parodies stereotypes about Native Americans and cowboys that were perpetuated by Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, which traveled the globe in the late 1880s. By mashing up the trope of the Indian, the cowboy, the shaman, and the buffalo, Stimson created Buffalo Boy, what he calls, a “gender-bending colonial-busting persona that tackled both historical and contemporary issues of colonialism.” Shot during the Burning Man Festival, his performances vary from humorous to solemn and draw, performatively, on the same spectacle of Buffalo Bill.

The exhibition is on view through May 16 in the Codec Gallery.

Trishelle Jeffrey's exhibition Best Breasts in the West is on display in the Projects Gallery through Mar. 21, 2020. The video shown here is a flip-through of Chapter Two in the narrative series of books included in the exhibition. Best Breasts in the West is a work that allows the viewer to see the intimate details of Jeffrey’s deepest embarrassments. This work shares the naked realities of objectification, people’s presumptions, and trying to navigate one’s own body when everything seems to be falling apart.

Mark your calendars! There will be a free screening of the documentary #FEMALE PLEASURE in the Creer Auditrorium at UMOCA on Friday, February 28 at 7pm. The screening is provided in partnership with @utahfilmcenter. Trishelle Jeffrey, whose work is on display in the Projects Gallery, will perform a reading before the film starts at 6pm.

#FEMALE PLEASURE is a plea for the liberation of female sexuality in the 21st century. The film questions millennial patriarchal structures, as well as the – now commonplace - porn culture. It accompanies five extraordinary women around the globe, reveals universal contexts and shows the successful fight for a self-determined female sexuality and an equal, sensual relationship between the sexes.

Ya’el Pedroza’s exhibition, Humanocene, opens this Friday, Feb. 7. Come check out this amazing work by one of our current Artists in Residence. The exhibition’s title, Humanocene, is a blend of two words, human, and Anthropocene, our current geological epoch that is defined by rapid changes to ecological systems and climate, largely from human impact.

While Pedroza's work acknowledges the effect of humans on the earth through the inclusion of trash, debris, and felled tree stumps, it also creates a more optimistic counter, by depicting nature as a capable, prevailing, and mystical entity with the ability to restructure and resuscitate itself. For Pedroza, our ability to correct damage to the earth must start with our reconnection to the land.

There will be an opening reception on n Friday, Feb 7 from 7-9pm and is on view in the AIR Space through Mar. 21.

Hope everyone is safe and warm on this snowiest of snow days in Utah. We're preparing for the opening reception of Utah Collects: Contemporary Collecting Practices this Friday, Feb. 7, 7-9pm. One of the pieces in the exhibition, Box 5, by Edgar Arceneaux re-presents FBI documents regarding civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. In Arceneaux's piece redacted passages are mirrors that reflect the viewer. Box 5 raises important questions regarding the historical and contemporary tensions between civil rights movements and the state and encourages viewers to consider their role in these struggles.

Ya’el Pedroza’s exhibition, Humanocene, reflects on the artist's relationship to the natural world—in both spiritual and visceral ways.

2019 Doctorow Prize winner, Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez, recently completed a commission for Duncan Aviation to design the interior and exterior of a Citation 560XLS aircraft. The imagery on the sky blue jet and embroidery on the seats inside is linked with Friedemann-Sánchez's ongoing work, which examines indigenous and Spanish colonial imagery and the concept of migration via a feminist lens.

Friedemann-Sánchez's exhibition, Casta Paintings, is currently up in the Street Gallery.
