Utah State History

Sarah Elizabeth Nelson Anderson was born in Kaysville to David Nelson and Sarah Brown. Sarah Elizabeth would go on to marry Dr. Porter Lee Anderson at the age of 17. Her husband did not live to see Sarah win election to the Utah legislature in 1896. Sarah was widowed in 1888 and left with 5 children to raise. Sarah was a popular figure in Ogden and Weber County and was one of 3 women elected to Utah's 2nd legislature.

In Utah, women were voting in elections during the time we were a territory. That right was taken away by the Edmund-Tucker Act. This act left women out of national, state and local elections. However, the question of women voting on the statehood ballot had not been addressed. Sarah,a vocal suffragist decided to challenge that question and attempted to cast her vote in Ogden's 2nd precinct. She was denied and a court battle ensued. Women ultimately lost that court fight, but it set the stage for a larger battle in which she helped lay the foundation for women in Utah regaining the right vote in all elections.

Sarah died in 1900 and is buried in Ogden's City Cemetery.

The centennial of the transcontinental railroad all but excluded the Chinese workers who helped build it. As Utah marks the 150th anniversary, their stories are being told.

They’re extraordinary pieces of history — three gleaming ceremonial spikes that helped celebrate the completion of the transcontinental railroad, now reunited in Utah for the first time in 150 years.

Looks like the museum will start opening to the public September 1 -- yes that's tomorrow! Remember, we're still closed on holiday weekends and Sundays. But come on in and take a peak ... they will be doing the outside of the building also starting tomorrow so you might have to dodge some scaffolding! But what could be more fun?
