The Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, is the largest museum collection in the world dedicated to the distinguished Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. The Hometown Harvest Festival, St. Helena’s most-beloved Fall event, returns THIS Saturday, October 17! And THIS year, the Harvest Festival will take place at Adams Street and Library Lane: right in front of the RLSM! Be sure to stop by our booth, and pay us a visit inside the gallery!

Thank you so much for joining us at our "Much Green, Intricate Country" Open House! Your presence, curiosity, and enthusiasm made the evening truly special, and it was a joy to share with you a window into California as Stevenson saw it.

If you weren't able to attend, never fear: the exhibit is open through December, Tues - Sun from 12 PM to 4 PM, so there's plenty of time to return and share it with others.

TONIGHT, at 5:30 PM, you're invited to our Open House Reception celebrating our newest exhibition, "Much Green, Intricate Country," a stunning collection of 19th century California landscape paintings that trace the very ground Robert Louis Stevenson wandered during his 1880 honeymoon on Mount St. Helena and beyond.

Admission is completely free, and the evening will include w**e and light bites for all who attend. We're especially delighted that Josephine Arader, our Board Chair and owner of Arader Galleries, will offer a brief introduction to the exhibition; her insight into these paintings, and their connection to Stevenson's California, is not to be missed.

Whether you're a longtime member or discovering us for the first time, we'd love to have you with us. Come see the landscapes that shaped one of literature's great adventurers, and stay for the w**e.

Happy Birthday to Robert Louis Stevenson’s stepdaughter, Isobel “Belle” Osbourne Field! Belle was the eldest child and only daughter of Stevenson's wife F***y Van de Grift and her first husband, Samuel Osbourne. Belle acted as Stevenson's assistant and transcribed his writing for him.

She would later write her memoirs in her books This Life I’ve Loved (1937) and A Bit of My Life (1951). Belle died in 1953 and left much of her estate to her nurse Margaret “Angel” Bailey, from whom a large part of the RLSM’s permanent collection was acquired.

Our new exhibition "Much Green, Intricate Country" is NOW OPEN!

When Robert Louis Stevenson arrived in California he didn't just find a home, he found an entire frontier of inspiration.

San Francisco was becoming the artistic capital of the West, fueled by gold, silver, and railroad fortunes, and alive with a new generation of California painters. Stevenson found his way into that circle through real friendships: artist and teacher Virgil Williams, and Joseph Strong, who married into Stevenson's own family when he wed F***y Osbourne's daughter Isobel.

These painters captured the same California Stevenson was falling for: Monterey. The Bay. Napa Valley. Knight's Valley. Mount St. Helena.

Our exhibition takes its name from Stevenson's own words in The Silverado Squatters, where he describes the California hills looking down on "much green, intricate country."

Come explore the California that inspired Stevenson, through the eyes of the artists who painted it.
