Our new exhibition "Much Green, Intricate Country" is NOW OPEN!

When Robert Louis Stevenson arrived in California he didn't just find a home, he found an entire frontier of inspiration.

San Francisco was becoming the artistic capital of the West, fueled by gold, silver, and railroad fortunes, and alive with a new generation of California painters. Stevenson found his way into that circle through real friendships: artist and teacher Virgil Williams, and Joseph Strong, who married into Stevenson's own family when he wed F***y Osbourne's daughter Isobel.

These painters captured the same California Stevenson was falling for: Monterey. The Bay. Napa Valley. Knight's Valley. Mount St. Helena.

Our exhibition takes its name from Stevenson's own words in The Silverado Squatters, where he describes the California hills looking down on "much green, intricate country."

Come explore the California that inspired Stevenson, through the eyes of the artists who painted it.

In preparation for our latest exhibit, "Much Green, Intricate Country," the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum will be CLOSED on September 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th as we proceed with installation. The Museum will reopen on Saturday, September 5th, with our new exhibit ready to view. We will see you then!

Coming soon! Our new exhibition "Much Green, Intricate Country" opens September 5th.

This summer marked our first-ever RLS Writing Summer Camp, and we want to celebrate what our young writers created. Our newly completed Summer Camp Wall features writing, artwork, and projects created by our young student writers from both sessions of camp. It is currently on display in the RLSM gallery, integrated with our brand-new RLS Writing Table.

The Writing Table is a new permanent addition to the museum, with creative prompts, activities, and opportunities for visitors to leave behind their own writing. It’s part of our growing effort to make the museum not only a place to discover Robert Louis Stevenson and his work, but a place that encourages writers to create something of their own.

Our first activity, inspired by the Dada artists of the early 1900s, invites you to create a poem by chance rather than careful planning. Using words and phrases cut from A Child's Garden of Verses, arrange the scraps in a random order and read them aloud. You can leave the poem exactly as fate created it or make your own adjustments to improve its rhythm while keeping its surprising spirit! Take inspiration from several such poems on display now, created by the RLSM Creative Writing Summer Camp!
