🐎 October Artifact of the Month: Lady's Leather Sidesaddle

Did you know that early sidesaddles positioned women sideways on horseback rather than facing forward?

Over time, improvements in saddle design gave women greater stability and control, allowing skilled riders to gallop and even jump fences while riding sidesaddle.

This month's featured artifact is a leather sidesaddle once owned by Mary Ann Woodward (Mrs. George Woodward), now displayed in Room 8 of the McQuarrie Memorial Museum.

📖 Read more about this fascinating piece of history on our blog: https://www.dupstgeorge.org/post/ladys-leather-sidesaddle-artifact

📅 Coming up Saturday, October 17 at 10 a.m.!

Join us for Red Rocks and Race Cars: Utah's Arrowhead Highway and Charles Bigelow, Road Promoter, presented by Lisa Michele Church.

📍 DUP Markers Along the Way!

Over the past few months, Sheryl Burnett, President of the Washington East Company, has traveled throughout Utah—and along the way, she started watching for historical markers.

Some she went looking for on purpose. Others were unexpected discoveries along mountain roads and in small Utah communities.

“I tried to pay attention to historical markers and take the time to stop and read about the history that is documented. I love the stories!”

Her travels are a wonderful reminder that history isn’t found only inside museums. DUP markers help preserve stories in the very places where they happened.

Take a look at some of Sheryl’s finds, then visit our blog to follow more of her journey and learn about the role historical markers play in preserving Utah history.

🐴 From wagon routes to automobile roads…

Five covered wagons against the red rocks of Southern Utah make for a striking reminder of just how much transportation has changed.

For early travelers, roads and trails were built around horses and wagons. Then came the automobile—and with it, a whole new challenge. How did Utah’s roads evolve to accommodate cars, and what did those changes mean for the small towns along the way?

That’s the story historian and author Lisa Michele Church will explore at our next Third Weekend Event.

🎟️ Free and open to the public

Join us as we explore a fascinating chapter in Utah’s transportation history—from wagon routes to roads built for automobiles.

🐴 A glimpse of transportation from another time!

We loved seeing the Dixie Freight Haulers make their way into St. George for the Dixie Roundup Rodeo, with horseback riders, covered wagons, and even a stagecoach.

Scenes like these offer a wonderful reminder of how very different travel and transportation once looked in Southern Utah—and how much changed when the automobile arrived.

That transition is part of the story we’ll explore at our next Third Weekend Event on October 17, when historian and author Lisa Michele Church presents the fascinating history of Utah’s early roads and automobile travel.

Stay tuned for more about the program—and thanks to the Dixie Freight Haulers for sharing their journey! ❤️
