Viking raiders struck fear across the coasts of Europe and often operated as pirates. From the late 8th to the 11th century, Norse warriors launched swift attacks on monasteries, villages, merchant vessels, and rival kingdoms in search of wealth, supplies, and prestige. While many Vikings were also explorers, traders, and settlers, those who embarked on seaborne raiding expeditions practiced what we would recognize today as piracy.
