The Latvian Museum was proud to be part of Heritage Days 2026 on June 28th and 29th. The Latvian ambassador to the US Elita Kuzma opened the two-day celebration by emphasizing the continuing friendship and cooperation between the US and Latvia. After a brief overview of the diplomatic relations between the two nations, Christopher Robinson recounted his time as the US ambassador to Latvia.
Many other programs filled the two days: book talks by Qin Sun Stubis and Indulis Pommers, a presentation by Mark Stubis about his father, artist Tālivaldis Stubis, Latvians in the sports world and much, much more.
About 200 visitors were delighted by all of the activities and refreshments.

The Lange family recently visited The Latvian Museum. Jānis Lange is the City Manager of Riga, but he had never heard of our museum. We were most happy to give them a personal tour before they returned to Latvia where they can tell everyone about us!

Heritage Days 2026 in Montgomery County, MD, are just days away, on June 27th & 28th from 12:00 to 4:00 PM. Be sure to stop by The Latvian Museum at 400 Hurley Ave. in Rockville for two interesting and informative days. Ambassador Kuzma will open the festivities, & Ambassador Robinson will join in discussing diplomatic relations between the US & Latvia. Then there will be Book Talks, Latvian Sports Heroes & many surprises!

Heritage Days in Montgomery County are almost here! Come celebrate with The Latvian Museum on June 27th & 28th from 12:00 PM to 4:00PM in air-conditioned comfort at 400 Hurley Ave., Rockville, MD. We will commemorate the 250 years of the independence of the United States of America.

The current Ambassador of Latvia to the US H.E. Elita Kuzma and the previous Ambassador of the Us to Latvia H.E. Christopher Robinson will be joining the festivities.

There will be many interesting activities and events for all ages.

May 27th was an absolutely intriguing and fascinating day at the Latvian Embassy with prof. Alan Gregerman and his table of curiousities explaining The Wisdom of Ignorance. The Latvian Museum will certainly take his advice to heart and put on its thinking cap! Thank you!

The Latvian Museum was very honored to have been invited to hear two panel discussions with the former president of Latvia Egils Levits and historians Gatis Krūmiņš, Ilmārs Mežs and Jānis Siliņš at both the Latvian Embassy and at the Victims of Communism Museum in Washington, DC. Both sessions were extremely interesting and enlightening.

The Latvian Museum was very pleased to acquaint the theater troupe from "Jūrmalas teātris" with the museum prior to the play.

wonderful group enthralled the audience on May 17th with a performance of the play "Flowers for Algernon". The acting was superb in a very interesting setting.

The troupe and audience enjoyed interesting conversations afterwards at a reception hosted by the Latvian Organizations of Washington, DC.

The program "Siege of Riga 1991 - Fight for Freedom" was quite a success on Saturday, May 2, 2026. Our guest speaker was Dainis Īvāns, the iconic leader of the Latvian Popular Front from 1988 to the total regaining of freedom in August 1991. His unswerving commitment to Latvia's restoration of independence paved the way to a free and prosperous nation.

Other eyewitnesses to the erecting of barricades to keep Riga from being overrun by Soviet special forces OMON in January 1991 related their interesting, but harrowing experiences. The audience heard from Tija Kārklis, Arnis Ansons, Jānis Baškers, Valdis Bormanis, Aija Celma-Evans, Ūve Hodgins and Karl Altau.

Many in the audience had never heard about the valiant actions of the people of Latvia in protecting their capital city.
