Meet the VisArtist: Estefani Mercedes

Estefani Mercedes carries an armload of yellow dahlias through the streets of New York on her way to Trump Tower. In her solo exhibition at VisArts, Estefani re-presents through video and photography her recent performance, 1,000 Yellow Dahlias.

The artist, known for her powerful public interventions, asked 1,000 Latino immigrants in New York City to write “thank you notes” to the then presidential hopeful Mr. Trump. She then delivered 1,000 yellow dahlias with the corresponding notes to Trump Tower in Midtown during the September Tax Reform speech. The dahlia is the national flower of Mexico, which turns yellow when deprived of oxygen.

She says: “Art activism will never trump more radical forms of protest. But perhaps through the acceptance of one’s own failure and the denial of improvement, alternative modes of affect can be developed.”

Estefani is an Argentinian/American Performance Artist who studied Political Science and Fine Art at Smith College. She was a 2014 recipient of the Norfolk Fellowship from Yale School of Art and a 2016 fellow of the Art + Law Program in New York. She has participated in numerous prestigious international residencies and has exhibited her work throughout Argentina, the US, Brasil, Mexico, and Switzerland.

1,000 Yellow Dahlias is on display at VisArts through March 19. For more on the exhibition: http://bit.ly/2lYpjEP

Meet the VisArtists: Join 2016 VisArts Bresler Residents Mei Mei Chang, Amy Hughes Braden, and Jay Hendrick for Stretch Cut Talk Pull – Panel Discussion on Sunday, February 12 at 2:00 PM, moderated by Laura Roulet and W. C. Richardson.

These three artists were selected to spend four months in a studio at VisArts making new work. The 2016 VisArts Bresler Residency features artists whose primary studio practice focuses on painting or drawing. It offers artists the time and space to create a new body of work, evolve an existing body of work, or develop a project in a stimulating, supportive environment. The resulting exhibition, Stretch, Cut, Talk, Pull, now on display until February 12, questions what painting and drawing are, how they can be made, and how they fit into the historical context surrounding these two activities.

Mei Mei’s inspiration for her drawings came from stories about personal objects: “It was a real honor to listen to these incredible stories from a variety of lives.”

Amy’s paintings are “visual, visceral platforms for a mash up of influences including feminism, personal history, current events, and art historical imagery.”

Jay’s approach to painting reflects a direct relationship to his small-town Texas upbringing: “To paint is to understand paint in the same way that to live is to understand how to live.”

Don’t miss hearing the artists talk about their residency projects on February 12. For more info or to RSVP: https://www.visartsatrockville.org/…/stretch-cut-talk-pull…/

Meet the VisArtist: Eames Armstrong

Eames Armstrong, 2016 VisArts Emerging Curator, debuts her exhibit, Noise, Body, Music, on September 16th. The exhibit explores how who we are shapes the sounds we make, and how sound informs how we relate to the world.

The exhibition includes video, audio, unique artworks, and ephemera from queercore band Homosuperior, Luwayne Glass (dreamcrusher), Angel Marcloid (Fire-Toolz), and trans-disciplinary performance group Antibody Corporation. Through this exhibition Eames hopes “that by cross-pollinating disciplines and genres new forms can come about, and old rules can be broken down.”

The VisArts Emerging Curator Program, generously funded by the Windgate Charitable Foundation, pairs an emerging curator with an experienced mentoring curator to produce new exhibitions and related programming. Eames worked with 2016 Mentoring Curator/Artist Jacqueline Maria Milad on this exhibition; Jacqueline's exhibition, Bend and Hold, debuted at VisArts earlier this year.

Eames is an interdisciplinary artist and curator. She received a B.F.A. from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2010 with emphases on painting, writing, and performance. She recently received an M.F.A. in studio art from George Washington University in Washington, DC.

Meet Eames at the opening reception next Friday, September 16. Find out more information on our Facebook Event, Homosuperior / dreamcrusher / Fire-Toolz / Antibody Corporation :: Noise Body Music Opening Party.

Meet the VisArtist: Brent Pafford

Congratulations to Brent Pafford, VisArts’s newest studio artist, who recently won the 2016 Juried Prize of $25,000 at the ArtFields Competition in Lake City, South Carolina. The annual week-long festival and competition awards more than $100,000 in prize money to artists each year.

Brent grew up on a family farm in South Carolina, worked in the organic grocery industry, completed a BFA in studio art at Winthrop University, and earned an MFA at Clemson University. He became interested in functional ceramics due to the relationships forged between maker, object, and user. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, and he maintains a studio at VisArts. Brent’s work is a reaction to how domestic items lose their potency in daily life and their value to future generations.

“Contemporary society is consumed with disposability, and people are no longer connected to the objects that aid in their sustenance,” Brent reflects, continuing: “the objects I create patiently wait to be discovered and enjoyed, retained, and later passed on to others.”

See Brent’s work in 2 x 6, an exhibition of our studio artists, on display through June 5. And meet him in person on May 13 from 7 – 9 PM at VisArts: https://www.facebook.com/events/509153425934701/
