Today was an exciting day at camp! Our sweet teacher, Mrs. Anderson, accidentally set off the alarm at the Laurent House. We appreciate she even gave a quick little tour to the police who responded. Thank you Rockford Illinois Police Department for responding quickly, even though it was a false alarm.

During a time of financial difficulty, Kenneth and Phyllis Laurent made the difficult decision to auction off six pieces of their original Wright-designed furniture.

The Foundation recently learned one missing piece has come up for sale: a Wright-designed chair whose mate currently resides in the master bedroom (shown below). This missing chair can be reunited with the Laurent House at less than half of the chair's current value. Our goal is to raise $11,700 from friends like you to reacquire the chair and honor the Laurents.

June 26 would have been Kenneth and Phyllis' 80th wedding anniversary. Your gift of any meaningful amount will help bring a valuable piece back to the collection, the last of the missing original chairs.

Thank you in advance for your gift. https://www.laurenthouse.com/donate

When Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Laurent House In 1949, he also designed original furniture for the home. The furniture included several items and 6 chairs, 5 of which remain in the home today. When the Laurents moved into their home in 1952, they had 3 of the modern barrel back chairs known by several names, including the David Wright Chair and the Oberlin Chair.

Day 4 of camp - last day for this group of campers (another session starts on Monday): Frank Lloyd Wright designed the "little gem" at 4646 Spring Brook Road to meet the unique needs of the Laurent family. That made it the perfect house for them! Today campers learned about design and function and created plans for their own dream home. We wrapped up a great week spent outdoors, in the red tent, and at the Laurent House with a visit to the gift shop!

#ThrowbackThursday Did you know that in 1949, Frank Lloyd Wright designed a complete set of furniture for the Laurent House? Below is a letter from Ken Laurent to Mr. Wright in early 1953 itemizing the final cost for the building of the Laurent House and its FLW-designed furniture. Wright received a 10% commission on the project.

Happy Birthday to Frank Lloyd Wright who was born this day in 1867. Considered America's most famous and prolific architect, Wright designed more than 1,000 structures over a creative period of 70 years. His architecture and design changed the lives of many but perhaps none more so than Ken Laurent. A spinal cord tumor at the age of 26 left Ken Laurent unable to walk and dependent on a wheelchair for the remainder of his life. Frank Lloyd Wright's design for Ken Laurent of a completely accessible Usonian home gave him a freedom and standard of living that fully enriched his life. In Ken's own words "I asked Mr. Wright for something to meet my physical needs, what he gave me in return not only met my physical needs, but my spiritual needs as well. This house has helped me to focus on my capabilities, not my disability. That is the gift Mr. Wright gave to me."

We had a busy day of tours this Mother's Day, but can't let the day end without honoring Phyllis Laurent. Phyllis was a loving and devoted mother to her son, Marc, and daughter, Jean. She was also a dedicated and loving grandmother to her 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

📍200 GREAT PLACES: Laurent House (Rockford, IL)

In 1949, Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Laurent House in Rockford, his only house for an owner with a disability. Beautifully-sited with wooded views, the one-story house carefully accommodated wheelchair accessibility for Mr. Laurent 36 years before the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The house is not only planned with universal access in mind, but is also a Usonian house, employing Wright’s more affordable one-story home design for the middle class, utilizing economical materials such as plywood and common brick. The Laurent house has a hemicycle footprint to take advantage of the sun's differing heights at different times of the year. The Laurents lived in this house until they sold it in 2011; and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. The Laurent House Foundation formed to buy and restore the house, opening it to the public as the Laurent House Museum in 2014.

These beautiful prints are drawn by artist Michael Pipher. Michael is a true fan of all of Wright's work and a dedicated scholar who has been studying Wright for many decades. He is also a good friend to the Laurent House, sharing his talent to provide amazing prints of the Laurent House for guests to purchase in our new gift shop. See the link below to order one of two unique posters depicting Michael's drawings of each of the 8 FLW sites included in the Unesco World Heritage List.

Just finished this beautiful puzzle I purchased at the Laurent House Gift Shop.
So proud of this shot; I didn't even know all those elements came together so nicely
I want to share some of the photos I took in my tour... Beautiful house...
Here is a photo of a LEGO model of Laurent house that I just finished and was on display at #Brickworld in Schaumburg this past weekend.
I found this interesting. The Laurent House opens in the summer and this one closes. No matter, it's still a Frank Lloyd Wright house.
I hope people have a wonderful experience touring this year 💖
