Graham-Ginestra House

Graham-Ginestra House The Graham-Ginestra House is a historical home and museum showcasing beautiful architecture and local history. This home is a MUST SEE!

The Graham-Ginestra House has been owned by two families - which perhaps explains the extraordinary degree of authenticity and preservation of the house and its contents. As you step into this treasure-trove, you will step back into a different world - one of hand-crafted elegance. Freeman Graham built the house in 1857. He owned the Graham Cotton & Paper Mills, Match Factory, and the first sour-mash distillery in Illinois. In 1926 his daughter sold the house to Mary and Leonard Ginestra who loved the tree-lined, quiet streets of Rockford. At the time, the South Main area and the Water Power District was the economic and cultural center of the Italian-American community. In 1978 the Ginestra's daughter, Therese Ginestra-Schmeltzer, established the Graham-Ginestra House, Inc., a non-profit created to maintain the house. On June 11, 1979 the house was listed in the National Register of Historic Places and was the first commissioned landmark of the Rockford Historic Preservation Commission.

Rockford is making a comeback — and so is the city's pride

The Chicago Tribune highlighted Rockford as a great place to live and visit, thanks to a growing downtown with hip new restaurants, breweries and cafes and big revitalization projects like the Amerock hotel! We love being a part of this wonderful community.

Long known for manufacturing, Rockford is in the midst of a reboot. A once-sleepy downtown has come alive, and the pride among residents is palpable.

Today RAM curator Carrie Johnson tells us about one of the permanent Collection pieces currently on view in our lower-level galleries. Hovsep Pushman’s “Guardian Spirit” was donated to Rockford Art Museum in 1940 by Mrs. J. Fletcher Coan in honor of her mother Lucy M. Beck. This piece, part of an American Masters exhibition currently on view, will only be up through the weekend so stop down soon to see it!
