Usually "insects in the museum!" would not be words that museum staff would be excited to hear, but fossil insects don't cause any damage to buildings! Today, the Fryxell Geology Museum's amazing collection of fossil insects was fodder for Dr. Brosius' Entomology students, marvelling at the preservation of the most delicate of wing membranes, to inspecting and investigating and identifying minute body parts. The Fryxell Geology Museum loves using its collections as a teaching resource for all disciplines across campus!

Augustana's Fryxell Geology Museum and John Deere Planetarium were a hub of STEM community outreach on Saturday during our joint open house event. This year, we also invited the Augustana student Chemistry club to join us too. Although the weather thwarted plans for telescope views of the partial solar eclipse, the weather did not stop the stream of ~150 visitors from participating in planetarium shows, hands-on geology activities, museum tours and continuous chemistry demos!

This year’s open house will feature a partial solar eclipse as seen from our telescopes. There will be indoor and outdoor programs and the afternoon’s events will include a planetarium show where the wonders of the night sky will be presented on the facility’s 30-foot dome. Also on display will be a quarter-ton piece of the Canyon Diablo meteorite.

The Fryxell Geology Museum, which features one of the best collections of minerals and fossils in the Midwest, will also be open to the public. Highlights in the museum include a wall of glowing,
fluorescent rocks, and casts of a Tyrannosaurus rex skull, and a complete 22-foot long skeleton of Cryolophosaurus, a large crested carnivorous dinosaur discovered in Antarctica. The observing areas are unheated so dress appropriate to the weather. In the event of cloudy sky conditions, telescope views may not be possible but the indoor programs will still be offered.

The Fryxell Geology Museum was hopping with visits from three Augustana Art classes this week. Students in Dr.Schussheim-Anderson's Art-123 Two Dimensional Design classes used the Fryxell Geology Collections as inspiration for sketching designs of lines, repeating shapes and textural patterns while Dr. Kim's ARHI-161 Global Art in Perspective students studied the raw minerals that were used in the pigments in illustrated medieval manuscripts, and how tracing the provenance of these mineral pigments can sometimes give insight into the trade routes of the time.
