In May of 1931, Walter Annenberg wrote a message and placed it inside a bottle. The message read that whoever found the bottle would be rewarded with $100. To collect, they should write to Walter's New York address.
Walter threw the bottle into the ocean off the Ile of France near Nova Scotia. Two years later, on September 1, 1933, a man named A.B Mason found the bottle (in Pembrokeshire Wales) and sent a letter to Mr. Annenberg.
Walter sent the money via check, and the Mason family sent Mr. Annenberg a photograph of themselves. Walter framed the message, a copy of the check, and the photo of the Masons, displaying the framed objects in the Room of Memories at Sunnylands.
Leonore Annenberg's attention to detail and renowned hospitality captured the attention of President Ronald Reagan. On May 20, 1981, President Reagan appointed Leonore to serve as his Chief of Protocol of the United States. In her role, she arranged details for visiting foreign leaders from around the world; represented President Reagan at inaugurals, funerals, and weddings; and accompanied him on all official international travel. This week, we celebrate Leonore Annenberg's public servant legacy.
We are sorry to announce that due to increasing 30 mph wind gusts, it is unsafe to raise the film screen, so we will be forced to cancel tonight’s screening of Ratatouille.
50 years ago today, Ambassador Walter Annenberg presented his credentials to HRH Queen Elizabeth II. Walter served as ambassador to the Court of St. James's from 1969 to 1974.

On April 14, 1969, Walter Annenberg was sworn in to serve as the American Ambassador to the Court of St. James’s, appointed by President Richard Nixon. Today marks the 50th anniversary of that moment. As ambassador, Walter developed new and meaningful relationships, including close friendships with members of the royal family.
On April 9, 1963, fifty-six years ago today, Walter and Leonore Annenberg purchased the land in Rancho Mirage that would eventually become the Sunnylands estate. Three years later, their 25,000-square-foot midcentury modern home was completed.
Celebrate spring with poetry!
In honor of National Poetry Month, visitors will be able to write and illustrate poems and display them in the gardens at Sunnylands. A pop-up poetry station will be placed in the Performance Circle from April 17 – 28 where visitors will be able to take part in a self-guided poetry writing activity—either creating their own original pieces or taking inspiration from famous poems.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Walter Annenberg’s appointment as the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom under President Richard Nixon. A month later, Ambassador Annenberg was officially sworn in and stated, “The appointment of ambassador is indeed about as high an honor as any citizen could have offered.” He diligently served for five years until his term ended in 1974.

Birding: An occasional delight. A contribution to research. A lifetime endeavor. A career in ornithology. Birding is a form of wildlife observation in which birds are viewed in their natural habitats. Watching, seeking, locating, identifying, and recording avian specimens has been enjoyed, not only as a regular hobby, but also as a citizen science. Birding can be done with the naked eye or with binoculars and telescopes. Others track birds by their song, and even watch for birds on webcams.
Sunnylands Center & Gardens boasts nine acres of gardens where migrant and year-round birds visit or make their homes. With over 130 birds on Sunnylands’ bird list, guests are sure to spot some of these cute and interesting animals during a visit. However you participate in birding, at whatever level, and for whatever reason, we welcome you to enjoy birding at Sunnylands.
See our events page for multiple upcoming birding programs.

Earlier this month, Sunnylands was privileged to host a gathering of many of Martin Luther King Jr.’s closest advisers and compatriots in the quest for civil rights and a better America. The occasion was the 90th birthday of Dr. King (January 15, 1929), and the purpose was to reflect on and examine the important lessons of the non-violent movement that did so much to change America and the world. On this commemorative weekend, we’d like to share a few moving recollections from our retreat from those who knew Dr. King well. Thanks to Jesse Dylan for this beautiful short film, and to the Gandhi King Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice for partnering with Sunnylands in this important initiative. We were honored to be a part of it.
-- David J. Lane, President, The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands
