Jewish partisan Faye Schulman talks about her camera, a Zeiss Ikon Folding model with Compur shutter, made in Germany and considered "state of the art."

"After the post-war period, Faye never used her camera again. It is now with her family in Toronto."

See a camera like Faye's, and see Faye's photographs, and learn about her experiences as a Jewish partisan along the Polish-Soviet border between 1942-1945 at the Tolerance Education Center of Rancho Mirage through January 3 2025.

Pictures of Resistance: The Wartime Photographs of Jewish Partisan Faye Schulman

"Born in Poland in 1924, Faye Schulman received her first camera from her brother when she was 13. That camera ultimately saved her life and allowed her to document Jewish partisan activity later. As a result, she is one of the only known Jewish partisan photographers.

Schulman's rare collection of images captures the camaraderie, horror, loss, bravery, and triumph of the rag-tag, resilient partisans—some Jewish - some not—who fought the Germans and their collaborators.

TEC staff, volunteers, and interns have been busy this week installing our new exhibition, opening 3 September 2024. "Pictures of Resistance: The Wartime Photos of Jewish Partisan Faye Schulman" will be available to view at the Tolerance Education Center through 3 January 2025.

The TEC's gallery art hanging system was installed this week, and TEC staff is so excited to begin using it for our new Fall 2024 exhibitions, opening in September and October. The 2nd photo is an example of how the hanging system works once art is installed. No hammers and nails!!! No patching and painting 😊

Exciting things have been underway since March 2024, when the Jewish Federation of the Desert assumed the management of the Tolerance Education Center.

There have been significant upgrades to the interior and security systems, as we prep for our opening and first exhibit in September.
