Challenge coin alert. New Raleigh Fire Department LODD memorial coins have been created. They cost $20 and are available at the Keeter Training Center office during business hours. Limited quantities. Sorry, no mail order. They're larger than conventional coins, see examples below. Real nice, real hefty. Presenting Raleigh Fire Department station crews photographed in late 2007 and early 2008, for the 2007 commemorative "history book."

Many were taken on the apron of Station 1, when companies came downtown to have portraits made. Most of the photos were taken by RFD photographer Lee Wilson and Mike Legeros.

This week, the Raleigh Fire Department Recruit Academy 58 started. On Thursday, our historian gave the 16 newly hired recruits a tour of our fire museum, after a classroom presentation about RFD history. Here's an online version that you can watch, https://youtu.be/q_7YeLF94bI.

EDIT: The location for the memorial has been moved to Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church at 301 N. Woodrow Street. The dates and times are still the same. The information below has been updated.

ARRANGEMENTS FOR MARK RANDALL. Retired Lt. Mark Randall (1982-2011) died yesterday, August 19, 2026, after a four-year battle with lung and brain cancer. He was 70 years old. He's shown in yearbook photos from 2012 and 2002.

Mark's family will receive friends on Sunday, August 23, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, 401 North Ennis St., Fuquay-Varina.

A celebration of life with full fire department honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026, at [Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church, 301 N. Woodrow Street, Fuquay-Varina]. Interment will follow the service at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1621 Broad Street, Fuquay-Varina.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth this weekend at the South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo (SAFRE), including our raffle winner from Fuquay-Varina. She won this custom wooden challenge coin border donated by EPIC Woodworx LLC.

And a special thanks to everyone who purchased our coins, shirts, or other merchandise. We had one of our best sales weekends and those purchases directly support the our operating expenses.

Our non-profit organization is funded entirely by donations and merchandise sales. Thanks for your support, so we can continue our mission of preserving Raleigh's fire history and sharing that history with the community.

Update from SAFRE.

Lines are charged, doors are open, and our fire museum is open for a special third Saturday monthly opening. We were closed last Saturday. We are located at the Raleigh Fire Department training center at 105 Keeter Center Dr., just south of downtown. 

Raleigh Fire Department Engine 20 is here to help until noon. We also have a visiting antique (ex-Bellefonte, DE) from a retired Fairfax County, VA, firefighter.
