We celebrate the 61st Anniversary of SEALAB II, one of the most groundbreaking achievements in underwater exploration history. On August 28, 1965, the U.S. Navy began the historic SEALAB II mission off La Jolla, California, proving that humans could live and work underwater for extended periods through saturation diving. The 45-day experiment pushed the boundaries of science, engineering, and human endurance, laying the foundation for modern commercial diving, undersea research, and deep-sea operations.

SEALAB II brought together visionary pioneers, including astronaut and aquanaut Scott Carpenter, and demonstrated that the ocean could become a workplace, not just a place to visit. The lessons learned continue to influence diving technology and underwater habitats today.

At the Man in the Sea Museum, we proudly preserve and share the legacy of the men and women whose courage and innovation opened a new frontier beneath the waves.

We join the Navy and Military diving communities in mourning the loss of EMCM/MDV Mary Bonnin, who passed away on August 24, 2026.

Mary was a true pioneer and trailblazer, becoming the first woman in U.S. Navy history to earn the designation of Master Diver. Throughout her distinguished career, she trained more than 1,000 military divers and inspired generations through her dedication, leadership, and courage. Her contributions to Navy diving and the diving community will never be forgotten.

"Mary didn't just break barriers, she created pathways for others to follow. Her legacy will continue to inspire divers for generations to come."

We extend our deepest condolences to family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Mary's remarkable legacy.

NEDU's first saturation dive

We highlight the 's enduring legacy, then known as the Naval Coastal Systems Laboratory, as we look back to the day of a historic milestone-the first saturation dive-50 years ago!
↘FIRST SATURATION DIVE IN OSF CONDUCTED BY NEDU STAFF - The Underseer - April 25, 1975
History was made here during the period of March 31 - Apr 4 when the first-ever saturation dive was conducted in the Ocean Simulation Facility.
Conducted by the NEDU Navy Experimental Diving Unit, the dive was a training and rehearsal effort for more extensive saturation diving research to come later.
**A DIVING TEAM of four men was taken down to 100 feet on air during the four-day operation. During the dive all systems of the OSF were operated on a regular and repeated basis, both for training and to obtain reliability data.
The diving team consisted of Thomas W. Cetta, NEDU engineer; HTCM (MDV) Robert A. Driscoll, project master diver; EM1 (DV) Jerry Pelton, NEDU electrician; and HT (DV) Thomas M. Kincannon, gas field operator for NEDU.
THE FIRST saturation dive was under the direction of LCDR J. Michael Ringleberg, officer-in-charge of the NEDU Detachment, with men of NEDU manning the facility for the four-day operation.
As the chamber was being returned to the surface in the decompression stage on April 2, diver EM1 Pelton was reenlisted by LCDR Ringleberg.
