Finally revealing my biggest commission to date šŸ¤™šŸŽØ

This textured marsh sunset redfish scene was a big one, and thereā€™s a ton of detail packed into it.

I wanted the sunset, marsh and tailing redfish to all have some movement and depth, so I built up a lot of texture throughout the piece to really make it come alive in person.

Definitely one of those paintings that looks completely different once you see all the texture up close.

Another swordfish bill finished up for Next Level šŸ¤™

The goal with this one was simpleā€¦ make a swordfish trophy that doesnā€™t get hit with the ā€œabsolutely not, thatā€™s not going in my houseā€ šŸ˜‚

Put it in a custom coastal-style shadow box and I think we got pretty close to wife-approved.

Another commission brought to life!

This one was all about capturing that feeling every duck hunter knows.

A Boykin Spaniel sitting in the water, locked in and ready, with the sunrise breaking through the trees and the duck boat in the background.

I wanted the dog to be the heart of this painting, but still tell the full story around her. The early mornings. The cold water. The boat rides. The hunts. The memories made with a good duck dog by your side.

Thatā€™s what I love most about commission work. Iā€™m not just painting a dog or a hunting scene. Iā€™m painting a piece of someoneā€™s story.

What part of this painting do you notice first? šŸ‘€

Finished this one up and Iā€™m pretty fired up with how it came together.

This large custom commission features a blue marlin greyhounding across the surface, the clientā€™s boat backing down in the distance, the Costa Rica mountains behind it, and the sun just starting to break over the peaks.

I went heavy on the texture through the splashes and kept the colors bold and vibrant to give the whole piece that fast, chaotic feel of a blue marlin going absolutely wild on the surface.

There are a lot of little details worked into this one, but from across the room, I wanted that marlin and all that movement to hit you first.

One of my favorite commissions Iā€™ve finished lately.

According to my 5-year-old art director, I need to add a sailfish, tarpon, flying fish, more marlinā€¦ and of course a ballyhoo. šŸ˜‚

One of my favorite commissions to date!!

A blue marlin greyhounding out of the water, the familyā€™s sportfishing boat backing down hard, and the mountains of Costa Rica glowing in the distance.

This custom blue marlin painting was created around a very specific memory and place for this family. Their boat, their people, and the waters of Costa Rica where they spend time chasing billfish.

I wanted this one to feel alive, so I pushed the color, movement, texture, and detail throughout the entire piece. From the heavy texture in the water and marlin to the tiny details on the boat and family, thereā€™s a lot to take in the closer you get.

Thatā€™s one of my favorite things about painting custom sportfishing commissions. Iā€™m not just painting a fish. Iā€™m painting the boat, the people, the place, and the story behind it.

What should my next original beā€¦a blue marlin, swordfish, redfish, tarpon, tuna, wahoo or something completely different? šŸ‘€

I honestly havenā€™t had much time to paint new originals lately, and thatā€™s a pretty good problem to have.

Iā€™ve been incredibly blessed to stay full with commission work, and Iā€™ve got several BIG pieces in the studio right now that are turning out better than I couldā€™ve imagined. I canā€™t wait to finally show yā€™all the finished reveals.

This one is ā€œOff the Rip,ā€ an original textured marlin painting that has since sold. I was going back in and adding some final texture, highlights, and little details to bring it all together before it left the studio.

But now Iā€™m getting the itch to start another originalā€¦

And I already have an idea in my head that I think could completely blow yā€™allā€™s minds. šŸ‘€

But I want to hear yours first.

Turns out getting a 10-foot Gyotaku swordfish to the 5th floor is easier said than done. šŸ˜‚

The elevator was too small, the stairwell wasnā€™t an option, so there was only one way to get it up thereā€¦

A rope, a 5th-floor balcony, my wife, and a whole lot of trust.

Good thing Iā€™ve spent enough time fishing to know how to tie a decent knot. šŸ˜‚

Somehow, we pulled it off.
