We have some new wonderful things happening at Challenger! Here is a sneak peak of our new hydroponics exhibit!

This new exhibit will not only enhance student experiences AT our center, but it will also be used to provide professional learning for area teachers.

As our hydroponics produce grows, we have the wonderful opportunity to donate to Nature’s Nursery; helping to feed animals in their care.

Celestial Serenity: A Cosmic Spa Night
Escape gravity and unwind with an evening of relaxation inspired by the cosmos. Join us at the Challenger Learning Center for a unique blend of self-care and space exploration as we craft luxury spa products straight from the stars!

During this stellar night out, you will engineer your own swirling, star-dusted Galaxy Bath Bombs. While your cosmic creations cure, keep the relaxation going by mixing up a custom Nebula Sugar Scrub infused with calming essential oils and celestial shimmer. Houston, we had an absolute BLAST!

We had out-of-this-world fun recently when incredible second-grade explorers from Old West End joined our crew at the Challenger Learning Center of Lake Erie West!

These future astronauts embarked on an epic cosmic adventure:
Navigating the stars inside our stunning planetarium
Launching creativity into overdrive by building their very own foam rockets
Competing in an action-packed, stellar round of foam rocket golf!

Thank you to our fantastic young explorers for bringing so much curiosity and energy to the station. The universe is limitless when you learn and play together!

What an absolute stellar evening we had last night at our Cosmic Autumn Night Sky painting event!

A massive meteor shower of thanks goes out to everyone who joined us in our little orbit. You all created the most breathtaking nightscapes and stellar art!

We hope you enjoyed floating on cloud nine while snacking on some stellar cookies and sharing plenty of laughs across the galaxy.

Thank you for making our universe a little bit brighter.

Stargazer Alert!! Keep your eyes on the night sky this month!

October is bringing us TWO meteor showers visible right here in Northwest Ohio! Whether you're an avid astronomer or just looking for a cool night out, here’s when and where to catch the show:

1. The Draconids
When: Active Oct 6–10
Peak: Night of Oct 8 into early morning Oct 9
Best Time: Early evening right after sunset! (Unlike most showers, you don't have to stay up until 3 AM).
What to expect: A relaxed shower (~6 meteors per hour), but famous for unexpected bursts! A dark moon phase makes this year's viewing conditions ideal.

2. The Orionids
When: Active all month
Peak: Late night Oct 21 – early morning Oct 22
Best Time: Between midnight and dawn.
What to expect: Created by debris from Halley’s Comet, these meteors are fast, bright, and average 15–20 per hour!

Top Stargazing Spots Near Toledo:
Within ~60 Mins Drive To get the clearest view away from downtown light pollution: Lake Hudson State Recreation Area (Clayton, MI). This is an official Dark Sky Preserve! Designated specifically for light-pollution-free stargazing and open 24 hours.
Approx. 30 mins: Oak Openings Preserve Metropark (Swanton, OH) One of the darkest natural pockets in Lucas County, offering wide-open clearing views.
approx. 40 mins: Magee Marsh Wildlife Area (Oak Harbor, OH). Located along Lake Erie, giving you wide-open horizon views with minimal light pollution to the north and east.
Approx. 50 mins: Harrison Lake State Park (Fayette, OH): A quiet state park in rural Fulton County surrounded by open farmland far from city lights.

Pro Tips for Best Viewing:
1. No gear needed: Binoculars and telescopes narrow your field of view—use your naked eyes to spot fast-moving streaks!
2. Let your eyes adjust: Put your phone away for 20–30 minutes so your eyes can adapt to the dark.
3. Grab a cozy blanket, pack a thermos of hot c***r, and happy stargazing!
