Toledo History Museum Non Profit Toledo History Museum.

The Toledo History Museum was founded through a governing board in 2005, incorporated on July 1, 2006; and received federal tax-exempt status in September 2007. The volunteer Board consists of four officers and nine at-large trustees who meet monthly and are elected by vote of the general membership during the quarterly November public program business meeting. The Toledo History Museum has the en

dorsement of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library and the Western Lake Erie Historical Society, with a letter of support from the Maumee Valley Historical Society. The Museum is a member of the Destination Toledo Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Maumee Heritage Corridor; the Ohio Local History Alliance; and the Ohio Association of Non-Profit Organizations.programming focused on our area's rich history.

1975 It isn't happening in Toledo, but plenty of Toledo folks are aware of it. The Poe Ditch Music Festival in Bowling Green. It is being held at BGSU drawing upwards of 45,000 fans for the all-day event. The featured headliners are Johnny Winter, Pure Prairie League, Golden Earring, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Richie Havens and Styx. A thunderstorm however soaks the crowd towards the end of the day and some of the groups do not perform.

1928 Crowds gather outside Toledo Police Court, where 26-year-old Stanley Hoppe of Elm Street is charged with the murder of a seven-year-old girl, Dorothy Szelagowski. She had been kidnapped several days before and her body found a day later on the front porch of her Palmer Street home. Hoppe actually tries to confess to some of the notorious “Clubber” murders from 1925, but he is not taken seriously. Hoppe is found guilty of the murder of Dorothy Szelagowski and is executed later that year.

1884 As hundreds of adults and children watch, convicted ax-killer Wesley Johnson is publicly hanged in front of the Henry County Jail in Napoleon. He was convicted of the brutal murder of George Williams and his wife in 1883. Their infant child had been spared, but townspeople are outraged and farmworker Wesley Johnson is arrested as he tries to make an escape from the area. He is later convicted and hundreds of tickets are sold to see his ex*****on. Afterwards his body is placed in an open coffin in front of the jail so people can walk by and take a look.

1936 An investigation into the so-called “Black Legion” in Toledo reveals that there are several “regiments” of the secret group in the city. One “regiment” in north Toledo is as many as 700 strong. Police inspectors say that while no violence is linked to any of the vigilante group's activities here, many meetings are held through the city as new members are recruited. Secret meeting places are discovered at Summit and Galena and at Fassett and Miami. Toledo Police say many of the members are initiated and given a bullet as proof of their standing with the group. 1928 Tragedy unfolds at Fort Miami Race track in Maumee. Race car driver Roy Goodwin, 28, is killed in a crash involving three vehicles with speeds approaching 100 miles per hour. Witnesses say the accident happened at a curve on the track as other drivers begin colliding with each other. Goodwin has no chance to avoid the pile up. He is killed instantly in the impact. Several other drivers are seriously injured.

1930 The Toledo Police Symphony closes out its fourth season with a special concert and banquet at the Lasalle and Koch Building in downtown Toledo. The orchestra has grown to over 70 members and hopes to reach 90 by next season. It is under the management of Inspector Delehaunty and the music director and conductor is Police Inspector Charles Roth. The Toledo Police Symphony will eventually become the Toledo Community Symphony and was the city's main symphony orchestra until the current Toledo Symphony is organized in the the 1940's.

1934 The Auto-Lite factory strike in North Toledo on Champlain Street turns deadly. National Guard troops begin open warfare on strikers and sympathizers. The turbulent weeks that led up to this crescendo of violence had brought numerous confrontations, brick throwing, tear gas and general mayhem on Champlain Street near the plant. Striking workers trying to get recognition for their union and their wage and safety demands were met with strong resistance from the company. On this day the tensions explode and in the smoked filled melee on the streets, two men are shot dead and others wounded by guardsmen. The shooting stuns the city and within days both sides come to a uneasy truce and eventually the workers and Auto-lite arrive at a settlement.
