Our Desert Room can transport you to Arizona, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, and Madagascar with its 300 species of cacti and succulent plants from all over the world. Although not all of them originate in year-round arid environments, they have the common ability to store water in their leaves, stems, and/or roots and limit their evaporative loss. These properties enable them to survive (and even thrive!) despite prolonged periods of drought and heat. In all of them, evolutionary adaptations have resulted in plants and flowers with unusual shapes and appearances, which most admirers find to be fascinating, beautiful, and “cool.”

Come see them for yourself!

Plant with purpose this year! When planning your garden, it is important to consider how it will impact the habitat you are creating. Here are our tips for practicing environmental stewardship in your own gardens:

1. Choose plants that are adapted to our area and be mindful to select the right plant for the right spot in your garden.
2. Think about adding layers to increase your garden's biodiversity and visual appeal.
3. Incorporate a variety of flowering plants that bloom from early spring through fall to support pollinators.

Ready to dive into gardening? Our perennial pollinator plant sale is the perfect place to shop. We have a diverse selection of natives, native cultivars and heirloom perennials available, all grown locally at the Conservatory with these practices in mind.
