The first of two opportunities this summer to go on our popular “Growing With the Gundersons” guided walking tour is this Saturday, May 9.

Hear the story of how the Gunderson Brothers developed and promoted this Oak Park neighborhood. You'll also hear many lesser-known stories, such as a resident who was a famous Cub, the location of the world's most prolific ceramic portrait studio, and how the neighborhood got the name "Fertile Acres."

Get your tickets now at oprfmuseum.org or by calling 708-848-6755. We have a full lineup of walking tours this summer. Read about each one under the events tab on our website.

Join Donna Sack and Sarah Doherty at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at Oak Park River Forest Museum to explore digital humanities and public history projects addressing housing discrimination. They will connect Oak Park's stories to broader national narratives. They were key team members of the award-winning digital exhibition, Unvarnished (unvarnishedhistory.org), funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and including OPRF Museum as a partner.

This free March 1 program also offers one of the final opportunities to visit the museum’s exhibit "Open House: The Legacy of Fair Housing" before it closes later in March. Doherty joined Frank Lipo as the co-curator for the exhibit, which won an Award of Excellence from the Illinois Association of Museums.

This Saturday, Oak Park River Forest Museum, Classic Cinemas and Downtown Oak Park are marking the 150th birthday of the Oak Park author who created Tarzan and fantastic tales of science fiction, including tales of Mars and Venus.

Tarzan author Edgar Rice Burroughs was born on the west side of Chicago on Sept. 1, 1875, and to mark the birthday milestone, Lake Theatre will be showing the 1984 film, “Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes,” on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 11 a.m. The movie, based on Burroughs’ 1912 novel, “Tarzan of the Apes,” was nominated for three Academy Awards, the first Tarzan feature film in contention for an Oscar.

The movie stars Christopher Lambert as Tarzan and Andie MacDowell as Jane. It is rated PG.

Gather in front of the theater at 10 a.m. Aug. 30 to hear Frank Lipo, executive director of The Historical Society of Oak Park and River Forest, talk about Burroughs’ contributions to pop culture and his life in Oak Park. That will be followed by a Tarzan yell contest, with categories for both children and adults. Think you can do a good Tarzan yell? Let’s hear it!

Admission to see “Greystoke” is $5. Tickets can be purchased in advance at classiccinemas.com/tarzan or at the door. The movie is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. after a brief introduction of how Tarzan films have evolved through the years.
