Honoring history by honoring those who made it. David Johnston was a hero among many heroes; note the article that begins the title "A" - a hero, not 'the' hero.
I moved to Oak Lawn in the late 50s. Queen of Martyrs for kindergarten, St Catherines for Grammar school, and Harold L Richards for High School. Moved away after my daughter was born in the 70s to Marengo. I lived at 10601 So Keeler. Went by the house last October. Great memories!
Recently I had a discussion with the Human Resources Director of the Oak Lawn Library. She stated that before she puts the available jobs out to the Oak Lawn tax payers to apply, she offers the jobs to current Library employees. I know for fact that these employees then tell their family and friends and then this privileged group will apply first. After this process then she will post the jobs so the taxpayers can apply. Legal scholars tell me this is only practiced in Union contracted jobs where the union actually has a promotional contractual obligation with that particular government entity. The hiring process is then highly convoluted where she claims that she can’t make a full determination by looking at an application but will not call people because it’s mostly burdensome. I think that this process needs quick and justifiable reform. I will be petitioning the board on this at the earliest meeting!!!! Share your thoughts
