Geo W.'s review of Moo Cafe

Somehow, and we don't know how, one of our exhibits ended up on Yelp! Apparently the Moo Cafe' shows as a legit business. We've started getting mail for the Moo Cafe', too.

We thought, "Let's have some fun." If you have been at the Moo Cafe' exhibit with your children, go to Yelp and give it a review. Be creative and have some fun with it. Geo's review put a smile on our faces.

Stopped into this little cafe with my wife and daughter. Took what felt like forever for a shake and slice of pizza. The chef was very young and we could...

Hello Everyone,

As part of our new cleaning protocols, we have been using an E-mist electrostatic sprayer. Electrostatic sprayers work by charging liquids (i.e., cleaners, sanitizers, and disinfectants) as they pass through a sprayer nozzle. This generates charged droplets that repel one another and actively seek out environmental surfaces, which they stick to and even wrap around to coat all sides.

It's a great tool and one that we will continue to use post COVID. The downside is that when it needs repaired, we could be without it for a few days. We'd like to be able to purchase a smaller, handheld electrostatic sprayer to serve not only as a backup, but as something that would allow us double our efforts after each timed play session.

If you would like to make a donation to help us with this purchase, your contribution would be greatly appreciated. Since we are a non-profit, your donation is tax deductible, as well. We need to raise $400 to cover the cost and any additional donations over the $400 will be used for purchasing the approved disinfectant for the sprayers.

These aren't the fun, exhibit type things that we all love to fund, but they are the necessary items that help us keep our doors open. Thank you for your consideration.

What happens when an exhibit isn't working? We fix it. If you ever wanted to see the mechanics of our "Spin the Bucket" exhibit, here's a video on a repair our Executive Director did last week. The set screw had shimmied loose and gravity did the rest as the pulley slipped off.

If you are mechanically inclined and are interested in volunteering at the museum to help us keep up on exhibit repairs and maintenance, send us a message.

We are starting to get questions about field trips. Currently, we are not booking field trips during general public/member hours at this time. If you would like to talk with us about a 2-hour museum rental for your group, please give us a call and we'd be happy to work with you. (708) 423-6709 ext 206 Check our website periodically to learn when we start booking field trips again. We will welcome field trips again (and hopefully soon)! It just is going to be a little bit more of a wait.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to maneuver through our reopening process.

Watch now: Why children's museums have been left out of COVID relief funding

You may be wondering, "Why are some children's museums open while others are not?" All of us are different. Some are part of park districts or towns while some, like the Children's Museum in Oak Lawn, are independent nonprofits governed by our own Board of Directors. We are all trying to balance what is right for us while adhering to safety protocols outlined by the state.

I believe that one of the big reasons for the lack of consistency in opening is the lack of guidance from the State of Illinois specific to children's museums. There are things that don't make a lot of sense in the Restore Illinois Guidelines. For example, did you know that under the museum guidelines, all rides must be closed (a few museums have rides). But, while museum rides have to be closed, you can still buy tickets at Six Flags and go on those rides. Under the museum guidelines, all hands on exhibits must be closed, but under indoor recreation, arcades like you see at places like Chuck E. Cheese can be open. This means you can play a driving game at an arcade, but couldn't sit in the fire truck in our museum.

Our Board of Directors decided last fall that we would follow the indoor recreation guidelines for our general visits and the social gathering guidelines for party rentals. We felt that these guidelines, unfortunately, aligned better with the work we do than the actual museum guidelines. All we asked for last year was for the state to update the museum guidelines to reflect consistency with the other guidelines they had laid out. That didn't happen.

While we in Oak Lawn are happy to be open, even in this limited way, we stand with our follow children's museums in the state who have not been able to open. The attached article link talks about the plight of the Children's Discovery Museum, Normal, IL and an effort they are leading to get the state of Illinois to recognize the importance of our field and some of the stumbling blocks they have faced on their journey.

The outpouring of love and support for the Children's Museum in Oak Lawn has been amazing since we reopened again in January and we thank you all for your support, your membership, and your patience.

Ps. And yes, more Wee Ones Wednesdays are being scheduled with discussions taking place about other initiatives. 😀

“The idea was that $15 billion would be available for these institutions that are economic drivers for their communities,” said Beth Whisman, director of the Children's Discovery Museum in Normal.

Amazon Review: This book is an amazing educational tool for all children. This book taught me as well as my child many things about our community that I did not know. Delivers a beautiful message of the important of family, community, civic duty, and being educated on what is happening around you. The topics for writings discussions, websites to further research on topics open up a vast world of educational topics and discussions that are perfect for in the classroom and at home. I highly recommend this book and a family reading night. More info at www.judybaartopinka.org
