City of Northampton

It's going to be hot, and the City of Northampton is opening a cooling center at the Senior Center. Check out their post for more information.

https://www.facebook.com/CityofNorthampton/posts/3365781240123100

For Immediate Release – July 17, 2020

City Opens Cooling Center at the Senior Center

In advance of the forecasted high temperatures a cooling center will be open at the Northampton Senior Center located at 67 Conz St from 8:30am to 4:30pm on Sunday, July 19th and Monday, July 20th.

The city is following CDC guidance for operating a cooling center during the COVID-19 pandemic to safeguard all cooling center users and staff. Visitors will need to wear masks on entry, must sign a COVID-19 health screening form, and provide contact information. Masks and hand sanitizer will be provided for those that need them. Visitors will be socially distanced from each other once inside the facility. The Senior Center will be disinfected carefully by staff throughout the day and overnight.

The cooling center is open to all members of the public and anyone in need of a cool place during the heatwave is encouraged to visit, however if you are sick, please stay home and call your primary care physician to assist you with your medical needs.

Here are some tips to follow during hot, humid weather:
* Slow down, avoid strenuous activity, and drink plenty of water regularly/often, even if you do not feel thirsty
* Stay indoors as much as possible
* If you do not have air-conditioning, stay on your lowest floor, out of the sun. Electric fans do not cool the air, but they do help evaporate sweat, which cools your body
* Cover windows that receive morning or afternoon sun with drapes, shades, awnings or louvers.
* Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light colored clothing
* Eat well-balanced, light, regular meals. Avoid high protein foods that increase metabolic rate.
* Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle
* Check on family, friends and neighbors

Heat stress is a serious condition that poses a health threat to many people, particularly the elderly and youth. Heat stress places a strain on the body, and if the strain becomes too great, it can cause serious and permanent damage, even death. Preventive measures should be taken in order to avoid heat stress. For additional information on warning signs and symptoms of heat related illness visit: https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/warning.html

For additional information on the Cooling Center, or if you need assistance due to the heat, please contact Northampton Public Safety at 413-587-1100.

The Great Northampton Egg Hunt beings today!
You'll have two weeks to have some fun, learn more about our local birds....and possibly win a $50 or $100 Northampton gift card!

How to participate:

1. Use the chart on the poster to match the 38 eggs hidden and displayed in restaurants, shops and other institutions in Northampton's downtown area. All of the bird eggs are from species found in Massachusetts and most of them can be found nesting right here in Northampton.

2. You have two weeks to find the locations of all 18 bird species in the scavenger hunt...or find all 38 locations.

3. To be eligible to win a gift card, submit your list (location/bird name) via email to [email protected]
The first entry with all 38 locations will receive a $100 Northampton gift card. (That's something to crow about!)
The first entry with the locations for all 18 species will receive a $50 gift card, and four more will be selected at random after the scavenger hunt ends on August 2nd. Entries will be accepted via email until August 5.

Forbes Library recently issued a statement about racial justice. It reads:

Forbes Library’s vision is to be a welcoming haven for all – an organization that strengthens our communities, inspires curiosity, opens windows to the past, and creates pathways to the future. We affirm our stance with all who condemn racism and work for racial justice. Black Lives Matter, and we are committed to offering every member of our community a library that is welcoming, responsive, safe, and reflective of diversity.

Public libraries are a cornerstone of a democratic society and have an important role to play in equalizing access to educational and life-enriching resources for all members of our community. We stand unequivocally for equity, justice, and opportunity. That said, libraries cannot stand solely on ideals. We must also reckon with persistent racist legacies within archival and library practices and spaces. White society has created this problem over centuries and it is incumbent upon white society to embrace whatever measures are needed to counteract it. We must speak out when there is injustice, but our words will mean little if they are not followed by action. Forbes Library pledges to make racial and social justice integral and ongoing in our services and programs. We will be releasing a more detailed action plan in the coming months.
