🐈‍⬛ Now on view in the American art galleries: Bill Traylor's "Cat, Pale Face."

Born into slavery in Alabama around 1853, Traylor did not begin drawing until his eighties. Working on discarded cardboard while sitting on the sidewalks of Montgomery, he developed his own striking visual language of bold silhouettes and simplified forms, becoming one of the most important self-taught artists in the United States.

This recent acquisition marks the first work by Traylor to enter the Chrysler Museum's collection, strengthening the stories we tell about American art.

On October 6, the studio glass community lost one of its most beloved pioneers, Paul Stankard. 🕊️

Known as a master of the paperweight, Stankard spent more than five decades creating intricate flameworked botanicals that elevated the medium from craft to fine art. His meticulous work captured the natural world with a precision and tenderness that was entirely his own.

His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched, and his work is represented in more than 60 museums around the world, including the Chrysler Museum. Our condolences go out to all who knew and loved him. 🤍

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we're sharing this intimate reflection from Seattle-based artist Rafael Soldi, who immigrated to the US from Peru as a teenager. 🇵🇪

His immersive three-channel video installation, "Soft Boy", draws from those formative experiences. The work explores how masculinity is not a fixed state, but can be a learned performance, and asks what it might look like to allow young men to be soft, tender, and caring.

🎥 "Rafael Soldi: Soft Boy" is on view through November 1 in Gallery 226.
