🏛️ Then & Now: A Century of History in Newton!

From the snowy streets of the 1920s to the present day, the Catawba County Museum of History has remained a beautiful landmark in downtown Newton!

While much has changed over the past century, the building’s stunning architecture and historic charm have stood the test of time. Recent efforts to clear overgrown trees and shrubbery have helped reveal more of the building’s original beauty, offering a clearer view of the grand windows, columns, and intricate details that have graced the courthouse square for generations.

HICKORY, N.C. - The Historical Association of Catawba County will welcome acclaimed storyteller, songwriter and visual artist Michael Reno Harrell to Harper House on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. Harrell will present "Blue Ridge Tales & Tunes - Homespun Humor & Heart," an evening of original stories and songs filled with laughter, warmth and nostalgia.
Harrell's natural gift for storytelling comes directly from his Southern Appalachian roots, where stories are as deeply woven into the culture as music. His songs and stories flow together in narratives that reveal the emotions and experiences people share - and the way a good laugh or a touch of nostalgia can bring an audience together.
His creative work reflects both the Southern experience and America's larger story. Whether expressed through a song, a tale or a work of art, it all comes down to one thing: story.
The program is part of HACC's membership event series and offers guests a special opportunity to experience live Appalachian storytelling in the historic setting of Harper House. Admission is free for HACC members and $10 for non-members.
Seating is limited and reservations are required. To reserve a place, call HACC at 828-465-0383. Harper House is located at 310 North Center Street in Hickory.

🌳 A Look Back: Saying Goodbye to the Courthouse Tree in 2016 🌳

In 2016, Newton said goodbye to a longtime fixture on the courthouse square. Located near the Barringer Monument on the southeast side of the historic 1924 Courthouse, this large tree had been a familiar part of the landscape for many years.

Unfortunately, the tree had rotted completely through, creating safety concerns for visitors, vehicles, and nearby buildings. Wise Tree Service was brought in to safely remove it.

But the tree’s story didn’t end there! Its branches were to be turned into mulch for the library and other outdoor spaces, while its trunk was to be cut into lumber for future use. The county also planned to plant a new tree in its place. 🌱
