Jean Arp: Heads or Tails | Hauser & Wirth, NYC

We usually know Jean Arp for his beautifully rounded, voluminous sculptures. But this exhibition, Heads or Tails, revealed another fascinating side of his work—his exploration of paper cutouts and their relationship to sculpture.

What I found particularly interesting was how Arp transformed simple cut-paper shapes into new sculptural forms and reliefs.

Compared to his familiar, full-bodied sculptures, these works may seem flatter and simpler, with less volume. Yet they offer a completely different way of thinking about sculpture through shape, layering, and space.

Sometimes, the simplest forms reveal an entirely new artistic language.

I loved Tom Wesselmann’s monumental still-life paintings when I saw his exhibition at Gagosian in 2017.

So it was such a pleasure to visit his former studio in Cooper Square, New York, where he worked until his death in 2004.

His old paint brushes, paint colors, and worktables were still there. It was fascinating to see the space where he created his art and to imagine him painting there.

What made the visit even more special was seeing his works alongside those of Japanese contemporary artist Tomokazu Matsuyama.

Although their styles are quite different, I found some surprising connections in their use of bold colors, familiar imagery, and art historical references.

It was a wonderful experience to discover these connections in Wesselmann’s own studio during the Aromory Art Week last September.

We all recognize Keith Haring through his bold black lines and bright primary colors.

But at this Tribeca New York exhibition, I discovered a different side of his work.

Turquoise blue, electric magenta, fluorescent green—and even crocodile-like creatures!

His 1986 Club DV8 murals were created for a San Francisco nightclub, where art became part of music, dancing, and everyday life.

The visual language is unmistakably Haring, but the colors and imagery feel surprisingly different.

This exhibition centers on the collection of Lio Malca, a collector who has collected Keith Haring’s work for many years. It also includes works borrowed from other collections.

What I found especially interesting were the works that felt different from the Keith Haring we usually know.

For me, this exhibition reveals a more experimental and unexpected side of Keith Haring.

Wendell Castle: Living Friedman Benda ✨

A very special exhibition that brings Wendell Castle’s world to life.

The gallery was transformed into a recreation of the home where Wendell Castle actually lived, allowing visitors to experience his furniture and sculptural works in a setting that felt deeply personal and intimate.

I especially enjoyed Alison Castle’s introduction in the gallery. I had briefly met Alison at Christie’s before her father passed away, so seeing her message at this exhibition made the experience even more meaningful to me.

Wendell Castle was a pioneer of American furniture design, known for his innovative use of wood and his playful, organic, sculptural forms. His furniture is always so distinctive, creative, and stylish.

I truly hope this installation will eventually find a permanent home in a museum somewhere in the U.S., so more people can experience Wendell Castle’s unique design and artistic vision.

Highlights of Armory Show 2026

show was very nice 👍. Especially, loved 3rd floor galleries shows. My favorite was first two videos. “The obsessive image” by and second one is

“THE OBSESSIVE IMAGE”, a collaborative presentation by Gió Marconi and David Nolan Gallery, explores the recurrence of images, forms, and artistic preoccupations across 20th-century art. While repetition is one manifestation of obsession, the exhibition considers a wide spectrum of obsessive artistic behavior: the return to a single image, motif, or medium; the meticulous refinement of craft; the accumulation of forms over decades; and the compulsive need to investigate an idea beyond conventional limits.
Bringing together Italian and European artists with art of the Americas, the presentation reveals connections between formally and conceptually distinct practices from different generations and cultures, tracing how obsession, in its many forms, becomes a mode of seeing as much as a way of making.
In a culture defined by progress and acceleration with the relentless circulation of news, images, the pressure of markets, and the obsessive measurement of time and productivity, the artists in this exhibition offer a different proposition: that to return to the same image, or form, or the same question or concept, is a very meaningful way to move forward. Artistic obsession slows time.
This presentation makes the case for that paradox.
