Sad news as we remember legendary artist Peter Max, who has died at 88.

His vibrant, psychedelic art captured the optimism and free spirit of the late ’60s and early ’70s, leaving a colorful mark on generations.

Peter Max didn’t simply create art—he created a visual language for an era. His work instantly takes you back to a time of flower power, rock & roll, peace signs and a belief that the world could somehow be a little brighter and more colorful.

Rest in peace, Peter Max. 🌈✌️❤️

BREAKING🚨 Trump’s Kennedy Center tore down “Blue”—so the billionaire Trump fired as chairman just bought it himself and is putting it on display at the National Gallery of Art.

Joel Shapiro’s “Blue” is the iconic 24-foot stick figure, frozen mid-kick, that stood outside the Kennedy Center’s REACH campus from 2019 until last Wednesday.

Before dawn on September 2, Trump’s crews quietly rolled in a crane and took its arms and legs off one at a time. By noon, it was loaded onto a truck. There was no advance announcement and no reason given. The Park Service even closed the northbound lanes of Rock Creek Parkway at 6 a.m. so the crane could work.

Josef Palermo, the center’s curator of visual arts until he was laid off in March, said he was called into then-director Richard Grenell’s office last September and told to “get rid of”ALL the outdoor artwork because Trump wanted new art for the reopening. Palermo said he delayed the removals as long as he could, buying Blue almost another year on the lawn.

Shapiro died in June 2025 at 83. He called Blue “a celebration of possibility.” His daughter Ivy Shapiro, who runs the foundation that owned it, said her father would have been “alarmed.”

The Kennedy Center said it was “deeply grateful” for the years Blue spent “animating our campus” and said removing artwork is common practice.

But the REACH, the $250 million expansion Blue was created for, was largely paid for by David Rubenstein, the longtime Kennedy Center chairman Trump removed in February 2025 before taking over the board himself.

Rubinstein just bought Blue from the Joel Shapiro and Ellen Phelan Foundation for about $2 million.

Rubenstein is also chairman of the National Gallery of Art’s board of trustees. Which is where Blue is headed to right now.
