"This series of animations was inspired by finding solace in celebrating traditionally dismissed feminine objects, the act of creating a world that mirrors my desires, and Eiichi Yamamoto’s dark psychedelic fantasy tale ‘Belladonna of Sadness’ (1973).” -Grace Miceli For #PopRallyxPetra, artists Madelyne Beckles, Aleia Murawski, and Grace Miceli re-examine the canonical representation of the female body through a “digital salon,” a series of original, short artist videos conceived with Petra Collins. This contemporary take on the 19th-century Salon des Indépendants is being released over the course of this week in advance of Saturday’s PopRally Presents Petra Collins: In Search of Us, where a site-specific, live tableau will confront these very notions IRL.
"’Worms’ is an exploration of one's fears and desires and how they often inhabit the same space. I was inspired by Hieronymus Bosch's ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights,’ ‘Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema’ by Laura Mulvey, and time-lapse videos of decomposing fruit.” -Aleia Murawski For #PopRallyxPetra, artists Madelyne Beckles, Aleia Murawski, and Grace Miceli re-examine the canonical representation of the female body through a “digital salon,” a series of original, short artist videos conceived with Petra Collins. “‘Let Her Eat Grapes!’ is an interrogation of Dutch still life painting by insertion of a black female body into the work. This is meant to illuminate the tension between aestheticizing the abundance that appears in the domestic sphere, while the Dutch were capitalizing off of black bodies through slavery at the same point in history.” -Madelyne Beckles For #PopRallyxPetra, artists Madelyne Beckles, Aleia Murawski, and Grace Miceli re-examine the canonical representation of the female body through a “digital salon,” a series of original, short artist videos conceived with Petra Collins. Less than a week to PopRally Presents Petra Collins: In Search of Us 🍇. Over the next few days, be sure to follow #PopRallyxPetra on Instagram: Petra Collins invited Madelyne Beckles, Aleia Murawski, and Grace Miceli to produce a "digital salon," a series of original, short artist videos foregrounding issues and ideas to be explored during Sunday's live performance. mo.ma/poprallyxpetra.

At #PopRally, we are incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to work with some of the most thoughtful and talented young artists around, and are always excited to share more about our collaborations. Here is what Damien Davis told us about his inspiration behind the Picabia-inspired videos that he made for our screens during Arty Gras 🌀 "I really wanted to bring everything back to the title of the Picabia exhibition, Our Heads Are Round so Our Thoughts Can Change Direction. At its core, the work I make is rooted in a lifelong, ongoing project to establish a growing visual language made out of a discrete iconography, capable of functioning long after my life ends. One icon, the heads, is inspired by the four Moors on the flag of Sardinia. I use this shape to investigate my relationship with the ornamental Blackamoors sculptures ubiquitous throughout Europe, drawing parallels to my own relationship with both the mammy figure and other “darky” iconography here in the United States. Picabia’s palette inspired me to create a sort of hypnotic, disorienting kinetic image, Hopefully entrancing the viewer into learning more about this shape, along with its convoluted history."
🌟 THANK YOU 🌟 to everyone who came out, dressed up, and made Arty Gras one of the most fun nights we've ever had, and to High & Mighty Brass Band and Damien Davis for getting everyone in the mood with music, masks, and colorful backdrops. Stay tuned for official photos of the evening soon, and don't forget to sign up for PopRally's mailing list at mo.ma/2mCVcAf to be the first to know about upcoming events!
"'Painting for me lies in the pure pleasure of invention," Francis Picabia wrote in 1927. Working on the Picabia exhibition even led to my own inventions! Here I am in my hand-painted costume inspired by the artist's designs for his Relâche dancers. Everything is more fun when you're wearing dots!" #FrancisPicabia Curatorial Assistant Talia Kwartler shows us just how easy it is to get in the Arty Gras spirit! Join us TOMORROW for PopRally Presents: Arty Gras for more creative costumes, live music, artist masks, open bar, and more! http://bit.ly/2lk2k3T
