The South County Museum is a leading educator in Rhode Island historical preservation and education. “It is often said that letter-writing has gone out of fashion … Indeed we live so rapidly, have so many things to see and do, and so little time to see and do them in, that long, studied letters are no longer possible.”

So wrote Arthur Eaton in … 1894?! If you, like Eaton, feel dissatisfied with an age that expresses itself in “a multitude of brief, hurried notes,” join us for “The
Art of the Letter” on Saturday October 24th from 11-2.

Stitch a monogram, practice penmanship, learn traditional printing techniques, and sit down to compose a handwritten letter to friends and family. After all, “letter-writing will never cease to be necessary, nor will it ever cease to be, like dancing, a graceful art to be learned by patient exercise.”

✒️✉️Thanks to a generous grant from the RI Foundation, this all-ages event is free.

Come learn and try indigo dyeing tomorrow, on the lawn in front of our Ice House Studio building! Bring one small item to dye (think t-shirt size) for $10. And while your here shop our thrift shop open from 10-2pm. Maybe you’ll even find an item to over dye! 🌸

Join us next week for the first meeting of our Reading New England: Nathaniel Hawthorne Class!

On Wednesday, September 30th at 6pm the class will dig into its first Hawthorne short story: “The Minister’s Black Veil.” Why did the Reverend Mr. Hooper start shrouding his face with that mysterious black veil?
And what might his choice reveal about how Hawthorne understood New England’s Puritan past? There’s lots to discuss in this eerie tale!
