The Nahant Historical Society and Celebrating the Arts are most grateful to our supporters, new and old, who attended the A Million Dreams concert last Saturday evening. The audience grew beyond our expectations, prompting our volunteers to set up additional chairs while exhausting our supply of programs. This was the perfect ending to Celebrating the Arts’ first season. We look forward to presenting an equally exciting and fun schedule for our 2027 season. The Nahant Historical Society is greatly saddened by the passing of our Honorary Lifetime member, Cheerio. We send our condolences to his father, Steve Thibeault. Cheerio was a faithful member since 2020, spreading joy and happiness throughout the community of Nahant. We were honored to have him on our team and will miss him deeply.

THE MILITIA WAS WARNED OF THE APPROACHING ENEMY

A grand time was had by all at the Life Saving Station on Friday July 3rd. Prescott’s Battalion Fifes and Drums put on a magnificent show and shared a plethora of information about the importance of the fifes and drums during the Revolution. Folks, young and old, came up from Short Beach once they heard the call of the fifes and stayed to enjoy the music, history lesson, and some watermelon and slush. A perfect day in Nahant.

In anticipation of July 4th, it’s Frederick Douglass Day hereabouts.

This afternoon at the Swampscott High School Auditorium there will be a reading of his famous speech made in 1852, What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?... sponsored by the Nahant and Swampscott Historical Societies and others.

Douglass lived in Lynn when Nahant and Swampscott were neighborhoods of that small city of barely 10,000. As a resident and an escaped slave, he wrote his first book here and was a close friend of the Boston abolitionist, Wendell Phillips, who had a summer place near the two streets named after him in Nahant. It’s also an area where, according researcher Sherry Smith, black citizens had also owned land in Nahant.

On a very hot day, consider spending some time in the air-conditioned auditorium at 200 Essex Street, eating some free ice-cream, relaxing, learning, hearing your neighbors read an historic speech whose opening lines will be performed by Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell…and the rest of us will take it from there.
