The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army, US Navy, Marines and Revenue Cutter Service who served in the American Civil War. Linking men through their experience of the war, the GAR became among the first organized advocacy groups in American politics, supporting voting rights for black veterans, lobbying the US Congress to establish v

eterans' pensions, and supporting Republican political candidates. Its peak membership, at more than 490,000, was in 1890, a high point of Civil War commemorative ceremonies. It was succeeded by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW), composed of male descendants of Union veterans.

4 months after receiving the Medal of Honor for Bravery, Civil War Veteran Jacob Miller was shot in the forehead by a Confederate Soldier during the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863. Incredibly, the brave Union Soldier went on to live for another 54 years.
"Seventeen years after I was wounded, a buckshot dropped out of my wound, and thirty-one years after, two pieces of led fell out."

Today is Leap Day. There was only ONE February 29th during the Civil War. It fell on a Monday in 1864. On this day, George Custer’s Calvary fought skirmishes during a raid on Albemarle County, VA. One of the most celebrated and controversial figures throughout the war, Custer distinguished himself as fearless, aggressive, and ostentatious. His personalized uniform style, complete with a red neckerchief could be somewhat alienating, but he was successful in gaining the respect of his men with his willingness to lead attacks from the front rather than the back.
