Thank you to those who have already participated! For those who don’t know, our little red schoolhouse needs scraping, carpentry repairs, and repainting in its signature color. Every dollar helps us achieve our goal to maintain and restore this iconic building. If you have visited the building, sat on its benches, or even tried your hand at some writing or arithmetic, please consider visiting our website and helping us to finish this project. On August 1, we will let you all know how much we raised and post photos as the repairs begin!

Got flies? Us too!

This is a flytrap patented by W.M. Riley in 1858. It’s designed to lure flies into the open bait drawer and through the contraption before entering the cloth bag as their final enclosure. In his patent application W.M. Riley encourages users the bait the trap with “sweetened water or sweetened whiskey,” making it an irresistible temptation.

Our own interpreter Jim Brady will be co-hosting this tour on Saturday at the wonderful Mt Hope Cemetery. It should be a fascinating dive into Rochester's medical history, including Frederick Backus. If that name rings a bell, it's because the Livingston-Backus house now resides in our Historic Village! We're so excited to partner with Friends of Mt. Hope for this program!

SEEKING THE CURE: THE MEDICAL HERITAGE OF MOUNT HOPE CEMETERY
Saturday, July 27, 11 am
Meet: North Gatehouse Entrance, 791 Mount Hope Avenue, opposite Robinson Drive.
Tour Guide: Dennis Carr
From the early 19th century to the present, Rochester has been on the leading edge of health care, and Mt. Hope is the final home of many of these innovators and national leaders in medicine and public health.

This is a not-to-miss tour especially for all our Friends involved in medicine and health care. You will be astounded to discover the number of full-time residents at Mount Hope who were pioneers in the field of medicine. Dennis Carr’s work at the Medical Library of the University of Rochester, his passion for Mount Hope history, and his years of interest in this topic make him an authority. He is also a fascinating presenter and one of our most popular tour guides.

Yesterday Paul Vitale visited the Genesee Country Village & Museum, a living history museum in Western New York, and shot this gorgeous salmagundi salad. It’s a historic salad that uses fresh hero’s, greens, and edible flowers that are available at any given moment. 🥗 //📸: Goor Studio
