It all starts with a head form, and four-way stretch navy jersey cloth.
This is stretched over the head form, pinned in place, and sewn closed at the nape of the neck.
The hair itself is made of unravelled raffia paper. Curled and arranged in accordance to the latest fashion, in this. See the late 1890s
She will be adorned with a large bird hat in the coming days.

NEW SATURDAY SERIES: Historical Wigs and Headwear
Coming from the John L. Wehle Gallery every Saturday afternoon will be this series showcasing how we design, create, and install the historical hairstyles and headwear of our exhibit mannequins.
First up: we will be creating heads, hair, and hat styles for ladies of the 1880s and 1890s. Tight, sometimes even frizzy curls, piled up high on the head - later to be mounted with hats of “murderous millinery.” This will be contrasted by the Audubon Movement, the ladies and gentleman behind the movement, and the Audubonnet!
Stay tuned later this afternoon for behind the scenes shots of how we create the 1890s hair!

TYLER's SPECIAL DAY by Helen Found & Ruby Foote

Ruby Foote and Helen Found wrote "Tyler's Special Day" in 1996 for Genesee Country Village and Museum. While we are all social distancing, we invite you to watch this "read-aloud" of the book.

Here are some discussion questions for you to think about with your children:

Which buildings, shops, and homes does Tyler visit throughout his day?

What are Tyler's favorite foods?

What does Tyler like to do when he is done with his chores?

Do you know someone named after their parents or grandparents, like Tyler?

How do Tyler's clothes differ from the ones you're wearing right now?

Enjoy!

Maple Monday Fact

Do you know how many gallons of SAP it takes to make ONE gallon of maple SYRUP?

Check the comments at 4:00 PM to find out!

Hint / Fun Fact: Sap is about 97% water, 2% sugar, and 1% other minerals. We cook it to get rid of most of the water. Adding heat turns it into syrup which is now about 67% SUGAR!!!!!!

DO NOT ADJUST YOUR PHONE SCREENS - these images are meant to be blurry.
Ikat, chiné, warp-printed, or ebru; these are all varying terms for the hazy woven patterns we see above.
In the ikat and ebru processes, threads are resist-dyed before being woven in fabric, while in warp-printing and chiné the threads or printed before being woven.
Both techniques result in a charmingly blurry image, in these specific cases floral motifs.
Top gown ca. 1855
Bottom left gown ca. 1876
Bottom right ribbon ca. 1850s
