“Fishing in a Woodland Stream” oil on board, 1880 Herman Herzog
This charming scene recalls the beauty and peace of being secluded in the folds of nature, in this instance by the woods and streams.
Herzog captures the flickering light between rustling leaves of the trees, directing the eye of the viewer between the fisherman and the riverbanks with broken tree limbs.
The Japanese call this “Shinrin-Yoku” or “forest-bath”, highlighting the physical and mental benefits bestowed by a day spent amongst the natural world.
This painting and many more gems are on exhibit NOW in the John L. Wehle Gallery as part of our “Fan Favorites.”

Today we pause to remember and reflect. The words of our interpreter Marie are as heartfelt now as ever.

This week for “Interpreters of GCVM” we spoke to Marie, or as most people know her, “Aunt Marie,” and her story seemed so fitting to share today. For 28 years, Marie’s warmth and love for the museum have filled the Hetchler Pioneer house she thinks of as home. “You have to have a love for this place. I think the day that comes to my mind more than any other day, to be honest is 9/11. I was on my way here, and that’s when I heard it, and I got here, came down here to do my thing, and two different people during the day came in, and I’ll always remember the first lady came in, she stood in that doorway, and she looked at me and she said, ‘I didn’t know where else to go.’ She said ‘I just didn’t know what to do,’ and I said ‘Well you come right on in here honey,’ and we just stood there, and we just hugged each other, you know, and I said ‘There’s no better place to be than at home.’ I said, ‘and that’s where you are.’ And a while later another woman, same thing, almost the same words out of her mouth, you know, and I said ‘yep,’ I said ‘You just come right on in here, and we’re gonna be together.’ And I’ll always remember that, because to me, this house is home. I don’t care what nationality you are, I don’t care what race you are, somewhere in your ancestry is that fire. And I’ve had people walk in this house and actually just sigh, and I’ll say ‘welcome home.’ Because this is it, I mean all the rest of the houses are wonderful, I wouldn’t take a thing away from any of them, but this is, the warmth in this house, even today, when we’re settin’ here freezing, the warmth in this house is, to me, just absolutely amazing. If I’m ever gonna haunt anyplace, this is the place I’ll haunt. This’ll be it.”

Récamier sofa, ca. 1810-1825
Hand-painted and hand-stenciled in gold, with baskets of fruits and vegetables, Greek key motifs, swirls and linework.
Backless, or partially backless, double-armed sofas date from ancient Egypt, but experienced multiple vogues across history. The late 18th early 19th centuries’ neoclassical leanings saw the sofa’s resurgence, as in the case of our example.
The name récamier itself comes from Parisienne socialite Juliette Récamier, whose portrait in repose on a sofa of this style forever linked the two names. This portrait, painted by Jacques-Louis David in 1800, was left unfinished due to Récamier’s personal distaste for the piece. It hangs in the @museelouvre to this day.
View this excellent piece of late neoclassicism this coming Labor Day as part of our newest exhibit: “FAN FAVORITES.”

For the last 7 years, my husband has taken me to the village for Mother’s Day. I really miss visiting the village and can’t wait until you are able to open again. In the meantime, I put my springerle class to work and made some cookies! I’m very pleased with how they turned out and can’t wait to buy another mold at the gift shop!
