Genesee Country Village & Museum

We have summer camps like no other – across more than 65 acres of Historic Village and Nature Center open space, campers can experience 19th-century fun and games, or explore nature up close and get out on the trails. In accordance with state and local guidelines and to ensure the health and safety of staff and campers, GCV&M is working intently to modify class sizes and programs, and enforce health and safety protocols across the camp programs and Museum as a whole.

Weeks of July 20 and 27:
The Best of Earth Camp: Outdoor Adventures – The Nature Center is your play zone for this outdoor adventure! Kids will enjoy hiking, fishing, wading in Oatka Creek, learning basic survival skills, outdoor exploration and fun!

Weeks of August 3, 10, and 17:
19th Century Summer Sampler & Earth Camp - Campers discover the Pioneer Farm and sample life in the Historic Village, having fun learning about 19th-century trades, skills, and crafts. At Earth Camp, budding naturalists and outdoor adventurers will love exploring more than 600 acres of environmental preserve. Playing in the creek, catching your first fish, hiking the trails, or learning how to build a campfire are just a few of the exciting activities you can engage in at Earth Camp.

Registration for Summer Sampler and Earth Camps is happening now! See link below for details and registration.

THANK YOU!!! We are beyond thrilled that our community raised more than $65,000, which was then matched, to support GCV&M during this period of pandemic, closures, civil unrest, and personal and professional struggles. The power of your generosity has floored us and we cannot wait to give everyone proper thanks in person at the Museum. GCV&M hopes the community will use us as a place to heal, have fun, be outside, and experience joy. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts and hooves ❤

Our upcoming exhibit “Nature’s Chain” will highlight the interface of fashion, wildlife, and social activism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Bird hats, with their feathers, wings, and even whole birds, contributed to the near extinction of native and foreign bird species, especially the Snowy Egret. The public outrage from this fashion fueled the formation of The Audubon Society @audubonsociety , and actual legal reform on a national and international level.
Our reconstruction of these bird hats depended upon our ability to do so without adding to additional destruction of birds and bird habitats. A majority of our feathers and wings are vintage. These were purchased from suppliers that ensure their feathers are ethically sourced.
Here is our 1890s bird hat, recreated using guidance from fashion plates of this era, as well as photographs.
Vintage straw hat base from Etsy.
Feathers and wings are vintage.
Silk taffeta ribbons is period, while the buckle is an historic reproduction.
Millinery by L’Aspect Ancien
More to come next week in this historical hat and hair series!

Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra

Looking back at this beautiful piece written to commemorate GCV&M’s 25th birthday, and performed onsite for our 30th birthday! It’s not Thursday, but still a lovely throwback to reflect on today.

Music unites us in a universal language that brings joy to our hearts. Musicians of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra recorded, individually, music from Jeff Tyzik’s “Pleasant Valley Suite.” We hope you enjoy the final project below and take a moment of personal reflection of healing.

Special thank you to our 2019-20 Season Sponsors M&T Bank and Rochester Regional Health.

It's #TriviaThursday! In 19th-century Europe and North America, milk and cream were both popular additions to a mug of hot chocolate. However, dairy products had to be added at home, rather than when the chocolate was produced. Chocolate makers had been trying for centuries to find a way to incorporate milk into their chocolate blocks and bars, but the milk either spoiled or failed to combine smoothly. What invention finally enabled the invention of solid milk chocolate? Check the comments tomorrow at 10 am to find out! American Heritage Chocolate #trivia #chocolate

06/08/2020

For today’s Meditation Monday, we reflect on the words of Frederick Douglass, one-time resident of Rochester and preeminent voice in the abolition movement of the mid-nineteenth century. Douglass’ life, speeches, and writings have reverberated through the years, influencing the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s right up to today’s struggle for racial equality.

The following is taken from a speech given on August 3, 1857, in Canandaigua, NY, on the anniversary of the West India Emancipation. As we take a moment to read these eternally-relevant words, we look with hopeful eyes to the inherent promise of progress and reform after protest and struggle that they foretell.

"Let me give you a word of the philosophy of reform. The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions yet made to her august claims have been born of earnest struggle. The conflict has been exciting, agitating, all-absorbing, and for the time being, putting all other tumults to silence. It must do this or it does nothing. If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without plowing up the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters."

06/07/2020

“In the woods, we return to reason and faith,” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson in his 1836 essay, Nature. People have always turned to nature for solace and for comfort, never more so than in the 19th century when poets and artists celebrated dramatic landscapes for their beauty, timelessness, and as a revelation of the Divine. But in Fishing in a Woodland Stream, German-born artist Hermann Herzog shows us a view of nature devoid of stunning views, rugged mountains or misty sunsets. Instead we see an unexceptional, everyday view of nature, filled with muted colors, and a sense of quietude in keeping with the act of fishing. At first glance, you may have missed the angler who stands on the river bank, effectively blending in with the trees around him. And that perhaps is the theme of Herzog’s work, that man and nature were inseparable parts of one whole, designed to exist in harmony with each other. #galleryathome #GCVM #artathome

For the last 7 years, my husband has taken me to the village for Mother’s Day. I really miss visiting the village and can’t wait until you are able to open again. In the meantime, I put my springerle class to work and made some cookies! I’m very pleased with how they turned out and can’t wait to buy another mold at the gift shop!
