Did you know.......

The Caledonia Fish Hatchery holds the distinction of being the oldest fish hatchery in the United States. In 1864, Seth Green pioneered fish culture work in New York State, acquiring exclusive rights to a segment of Spring Creek in Caledonia. His objective was to cultivate brook trout. Notably, the springs yielded 200,000,000 gallons of water daily, maintaining an average temperature of 49 degrees. By 1870, the Caledonia Hatchery successfully achieved artificial propagation of fish, subsequently producing and distributing millions of fish worldwide. Additionally, James Annin, Jr., a native of Leroy, New York, operated a hatchery on a section of Spring Creek, establishing the Caledonia Trout ponds, which attracted anglers from far and wide. He later leveraged his expertise as a private consultant to plan private hatcheries nationwide. James also founded the Caledonia Fishing Club, crafting his own reels and tying his own fishing lures.

Does anyone know who designed the Caledonia Fish Hatchery?

With thousands of miles of streams across the state, there are ample trout fishing opportunities in New York. Each year the DEC stocks around 2.3 million catchable-size brook, brown and rainbow trout in almost 300 lakes, ponds and roughly 3,100 miles of streams across the state. Many of these streams support wild populations of trout as well.
