This Thursday, come spend the evening with Foxfire at Currahee Brewing Company for another Hoppy to Help night!

Join us September 3 from 5–9 PM for live music, Blue Hound BBQ, heritage skills, good company, and a cold beer, all while supporting The Foxfire Museum.

Seth Menhinick and Laura Seberg will be behind the bar as our guest beertenders, with live music from Whiskey Creek Band and One Day. We’ll also have blacksmithing, fiber arts and other heritage skills throughout the evening, plus Foxfire merch, magnets, and collectible mugs.

Every beer poured and every person who comes out helps support Foxfire’s work preserving Appalachian stories, traditions, and skills and keeping them alive for generations to come.

One weekend, two Appalachian festivals 🎶

What do the John C. Campbell Folk School and Foxfire have in common? A shared commitment to the stories, music and craft traditions of Appalachia.

This fall, consider supporting both organizations for two events happening the first weekend in October. Foxfire hosts its annual Mountaineer Festival on Oct. 3, and the Folk School hosts its 50th Annual Fall Festival Oct. 3 and 4.

A little preview of what you might see at Foxfire this Saturday!

We're excited to welcome Chris and Roz Behre as demonstrators on August 29. Chris will be making traditional wooden toys, including limber jacks and spinning tops, while Roz will demonstrate braided rag rugs and lucet work, sharing how materials like flax were processed and put to use. They'll be demonstrating in period clothing throughout the day.

Here you can see our own Jess and Walker showing us a few more of Chris's toys!

You'll find those same handmade traditions throughout Foxfire's Mercantile, too, from Kelly Coldren's felted kitties and Sharon's handwoven towels to braided rugs and other work by regional makers.

We also have Basic Basketmaking with Paula Puckett this Saturday, August 29, from 10 AM to 2 PM, with 2 spots left. Participants will learn the basics of basket weaving while making a small berry basket or potato basket.

And we have some good news: we're staying open later on Saturdays!
Beginning this weekend, our hours are:

Monday–Friday: 9 AM–4 PM
Saturday: 9 AM–5 PM
Sunday: 12–4 PM

So come walk the trails, enjoy the last days of summer, welcome the first hints of fall, meet our demonstrators, and spend a little extra time with us on the mountain.

Dolly Parton never forgot where she came from.

From a one-room cabin in the Smoky Mountains to stages around the world, she carried Appalachia with her -- in her music, her humor, her generosity, and the way she spoke of home. She showed the world that mountain roots were something to be proud of, never something to outgrow.

From all of us at Foxfire: thank you, Dolly, for the joy you gave us, and for making the mountains proud every step of the way. ❤️

We’ve received some beautiful summer harvests from Foxfire staff member Dave Jensen and Foxfire demonstrator Sharon Grist, and this time of year, the work doesn’t stop when the vegetables come out of the garden.

Harvesting, cleaning, trimming, shelling, chopping, canning, drying, and preserving were all part of putting food by for the months ahead.

Leather britches were a staple on Southern Appalachian homesteads. Green beans were strung up and dried during the summer harvest, then pulled down and cooked throughout the winter. This simple method of preservation took far less work and fewer resources than canning, and the flavor was worth the wait.

If you’d like to try them yourself, cook dried beans off the string slowly in scalding water with ham or another bit of meat until tender. They’re good in a stew or all on their own ~

Looking for a memorable family outing? On Saturday, September 12, 2026, you'll find a vibrant day of living history, hands-on craft demonstrations, and family fun here at the Northeast Georgia History Center!

Throughout the day, the The Foxfire Museum will be in residence to demonstrate traditional Appalachian skills and regional heritage crafts. Alongside Foxfire, the Georgia Mountain Fiber Arts Guild will offer an up-close look at historic textile traditions.

In celebration of National Grandparents Day, NEGAHC is hosting a special morning of family activities from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Grandparents and grandchildren can team up to explore history firsthand through interactive crafts, historic toys and games, and guided activities built for all ages.

Combining master craft demonstrations with a celebration of family roots, this unique event builds a bridge between past and present, offering Gainesville families a memorable opportunity to learn, create, and connect together.

A portion of the proceeds from this event will support The Foxfire Village Museum & Mercantile in Rabun County, GA

Happy 13 years at Foxfire to our own Jessica Parker! 🎉

Jess joined Foxfire in 2013, and over the years she’s done a little bit of just about everything—working with our members and donors, keeping Foxfire Magazine subscriptions straight, working with local artisans and longtime Foxfire friends, helping with the shop, promotions, events, and plenty more.

More than anything, Jess knows Foxfire. She knows the people, the stories, who to call, where to find things, and probably the answer to whatever question the rest of us are asking. And there’s usually plenty of laughter involved.

Thirteen years is a lot of memories, changes, visitors, events, and busy days at Foxfire. We’re so glad Jess has been here for all of them.

Happy 13 years, Jess!!! ❤️
