Join us Thursday at 2pm for this week's Parlor Talk at "806" in Morehead City.

Long-term data greatly enhance our ability to understand the population and community dynamics of ecologically and economically important species. This is certainly true for coastal sharks that can be both long-lived and highly mobile, and that are critical drivers and indicators of ecosystem health. Dating back to the early 1900s, researchers have visited the Cape Lookout region to survey and sample sharks. Since 1972, faculty, staff, and students at the UNC Institute of Marine Sciences have regularly surveyed coastal sharks near Cape Lookout, NC. This talk will overview some of the key findings and long-term trends in 100+ years of shark survey data collected near Cape Lookout. Aspects of shark biology and the food-web roles of sharks within coastal ecosystems will also be highlighted.

Presenter Dr. Joel Fodrie is an ecologist at the Duke University Marine Lab who studies the population dynamics of fishes and shellfishes, as well as the community ecology of estuarine systems. Since 2010, he has also served as one of the primary caretakers of the UNC long-term shark survey.

Sign up now for our upcoming Beginning Basic Quilting Class!

SESSION 1
An introduction of quilt terminology, types of fabric and tools, orientation to machines and sewing methods specific to quilt making. Select fabric and choose class project.

SESSION 2 & 3
Quilters will work on quilting a pot holder. The last session will focus on finishing your pot holder, and discussing next steps in developing an on-going quilt class schedule for quilters of all ages.

*LOCATION: Core Sound Museum Store & Gallery 806 Arendell St, Morehead City (Enter from Bridges St. lot)
*SCHEDULE: Wednesday mornings: August 12, 19, & 26 9am – 1pm
