Vintage & Renowned Core Sound Decoys are for sale in Online Auction by House Auctions, Inc. For the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum.

December is coming soon and so will decoy weekend on Harkers Island ...

Everything will be different -- carvers, artists and crafters tailgating in the parking lot, food trucks, museum store inside and out, a Gallery of Trees inside that is unbelievably beautiful, limited numbers in the building at the same time, social distancing encouraged and monitored, masks required -- but the same Core Sound Christmas Spirit will be there, and we hope you are too!

Our auction is ONLINE ONLY this year, bidding begins tomorrow.
https://www.houseauctioncompany.com/project/details/54847 Auction items will be on preview beginning Friday, Dec 4.

Friday night (Dec 4) will be another "Lights Out Night" kick-off for the Weekend with our Gallery of Trees a glow, refreshments, music, a few hardy vendors outside, the auction preview and more outside lights than you can imagine. The entire Island will be shining bright as homes and businesses are being judged that night for the "Cab Ramsey Island Decorating Award," sponsoed by Jarrett Bay Boatworks. (The Island is already lighting up!)

Everyone is welcome. We are doing all we can to keep all our areas extra clean and safe for you to come. We know there are many who just cannot come and we will miss you. Some of you are still trying to decide and some are determined - no matter what!

Just know that we are understanding of everyone's situation and we ask your support as we help our community and sustain our museum operations by holding this gathering, even in the midst of a pandemic.

Thank you for all you do .. your visits to 806, the museum, the online shopping, your raffle ticket purchases, your membership renewal and year-end giving. We have no idea what 2021 will hold, but we are preparing for an uncertain winter ahead with events still on hold, so YOUR SUPPORT truly is more important than ever!

Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center

The first weekend of December has been Decoy Weekend on Harkers Island for 33 years. It will be this year too!

Even though Covid has caused the Festival at Harkers Island School to be cancelled, DECOYS will still be front and center all over Harkers Island during the weekend of Dec 4-6.

The Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center’s sister event, WATERFOWL WEEKEND will continue with decoy carvers, collectors, artists and crafters tail-gating on the grounds surrounding the Museum on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday.
Many of the festival’s favorite carvers will be tailgating at the Museum this year, continuing the traditions that now stretches across generations.

“The best part of the whole weekend to me (and I suspect for many others) has always been about seeing old friends. I can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be, or anything else I’d rather do, than spend a little time with like-minded folks enjoying the time-honored tradition of waterfowling on Core Sound,” Corey Lawrence, carver, artist and Museum board vice-president reflected.

The Carolina Decoy Collectors Association will bring their exhibition and competition for vintage North Carolina decoys to the Museum starting Friday evening, with old “old-bird” dealers on hand to buy, sell, swap and trade!

Core Sound Museum’s 2020 Heritage Auction will be online with the decoys on display at the Museum throughout the weekend. The working decoys of Henry Murphy, Ammie Paul, Elmer Salter, Eldon Willis, Julian Hamilton, Judge Lambert Morris and many other Core Sound’s finest carvers will be there!

The Museum will host for the first-time ever a Gallery of Trees celebrating the traditions, communities and special events of our region with beautiful decorated crab pot trees nestled in the Museum exhibitions that have been in storage for two years while the Museum rebuilt after Hurricane Florence.

The Store at the Museum will be located inside and out featuring crab pot trees, Christmas collectibles and the amazing Island Anchor that has become a new Christmas must-have! The Core Sound Quilters will be drawing for their 2020 creation, “A New Day,” and the food will be as good as ever! Scallop fritters, fried shrimp and sweet puppies …

Corey continued, “I envision this year as a tailgating party will be somewhat different than years before, but improvising is one of the truest and most defining traits of a Core Sounder, so we’ll do the best we can. It seems 2020 has taken so much away from us I’m not ready to let it take the best weekend of our whole year away.”

The Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center is located at 1785 Island Road on Harkers Island. The Core Sound Museum Store has its Downtown location at 806 Arendell Street in Morehead City. During the Weekend as with all Museum activities, all Covid-19 precautions will be in-place to protect the safety of all who participate and in compliance with state and federal guidelines.

For more information on Waterfowl Weekend including how to make your tailgating reservation, please contact CSWM&HC at 252.728.1500 or email [email protected].

Too many years' history has gone into the first weekend of December and we will find a way to keep the tradition going strong! If you are an exhibitor and would like to receive details once they are roughed out, please message us or email the [email protected].

There are no definites in the world right now, but we are going to make plans for all the possibilities and get to work getting ready! Mark your calendar now ..

December is coming ...

Hello Carvers, Artists, Everyone who loves December on Harkers Island –

The Museum is looking at all the possibilities for Waterfowl Weekend, even in the midst of a pandemic, and we are wondering how many of you might be interested in coming to the Museum that Sat/Sun for a "tail-gating" kinda gathering in the parking lot. We are discussing this possibility w/ the park service and they are willing to work with us but we need to know what the interest might be.

We will be doing some things online and some parts of the weekend will have to be changed completely, but we need to hear from YOU to know if you would be interested in an outdoor space to sell your work. Cars, vans, trucks would be spaced according to the social distancing rules and internet access would be available throughout the parking lot.

The Museum will be its most beautiful ever with Christmas throughout the gallery. Our exhibits have all returned and we are looking forward to everyone seeing how wonderful it is now that all the damage is repaired.

We will have food outside – as always - and other things going on inside and out, and we hope you will be there with us. Details will be worked out; we just need to know if YOU would be interested????

Of course, everything depends on the virus and the rules at the time, but DECEMBER IS COMING and we have to make some plans! It's time to get to work ...

Email the [email protected] or PM here and we'll start making notes on your ideas, suggestions, questions. "The show will go on ..." just like it has these past two years through the storm's damage and the rebuild. We can do it!

Would love for you to stop by 806!

The stories live on ...

All it needs is a “wash” over it for an aged look and I believe it’s done. To some it’s just a sign…to me it’s more. This was originally designed and painted by my daddy before a museum even existed! Some may remember the office and gift shop that we had beside the Fire Department on the Island…That’s where this initially hung. Once the museum was "dried in" the sign was put on the side of the building. It’s been touched up a couple times in approximately 27-28 years! I was glad to have some help from my boys in refurbishing the logo once more. When we sanded through the layers and got down to the paint that Daddy laid it felt surreal to lay my hands where his once laid and paint over lines that he once sketched. I’d like to think he is mighty proud that his son and grandsons are adding to what he started…This will live out the rest of it’s days mounted over the main gallery inside the Core Sound Waterfowl and Heritage Museum…I hope when you visit you’ll take time to check it out for a little bit and remember David A Lawrence. If you never knew him...well, bless your heart...you missed out.

Every five years ...

Diamond City, that series of hamlets along Shackleford Banks, was home to more than five hundred fishermen, whalers, boatbuilders and their families at the end of the 19th Century.

There, literally at the water's edge, was nearly everything necessary to sustain their humble manner of living. Almost of necessity, that shoreline became the focal point of their lives. Within the expanse of just a few hundred feet was found what was at once their homes and their gardens, their schools and their workshops, their theaters and their playgrounds.
Joel Hancock, Sr., “Strengthened by the Storm”

From October 1891 until October 1898, eighteen recorded storms ravaged these sand banks. People grew weary and began to talk of moving to higher ground away from the only home they had ever known.

On August 17, 1899, the San Ciriaco hurricane, crossed the coast of North Carolina, leaving behind an unrecoverable path of destruction … wells filled with saltwater and sand … trees were blistered with salt … the landscape barren.

And thus the migration began in earnest for Diamond City’s families as they began to move inland … taking down their homes and boarding them across skiffs loaded with all their belongings in search of a new place to carry on their way of life.

Families moved to Morehead City’s Promise Land and to Bogue Banks’ Salter Path, but most would move just across the sound to Harkers Island.

Now, generations later, descendants of those Diamond City families hold onto their ancestral ties to these windswept shores with a sacred allegiance to their home place, returning often, renewing their ties to this place and one another.

Diamond City Homecoming, celebrated every five years, brings together families who share these common ties, remembering loved ones they never knew, coming home to a place they’ve never lived …

$3820 raised the first day of Steve Smith's Challenge .. Looking for just a few more dollars to take us to the top!

In total, Hurricane Florence’s damage to the museum — remediation, moving, conservation of the collection, storage, and estimated rebuild — totals more than $3 million.

Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center

Calling all the faithful ones .. old and new.

The next chapter of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center's history is about to begin ... Come be part of it!

On Nov 1 we will open our Downtown MHC location at 806 Arendell Street and begin welcoming guests to the museum's temporary office and visitors center "at the end of the road."

Both locations will be important parts of rebuilding our museum and keeping Core Sound's work moving forward!

Would you be willing to help volunteer at either location?

We will be hosting a "greeters meeting" at the Museum at 10 am Mon, October 29 ... We are already making plans for Waterfowl Weekend and there's much work to do and lots of folks to talk to ... We will be open there as many days as we can cover with staff and volunteers! Folks are coming to visit and now they have lots of questions ... and we have work to do!

We need all our friends in town who can help with the new gift shop location to meet with us at 2 pm on Mon, October 29 to discuss how you help with all the exciting holiday events happening at 806 Arendell starting Nov 1 with our annual 25% off CRABPOT TREE SALE ... Our Christmas Open House on Nov 17 ... Our Thanksgiving Weekend Sales ... and all the events that Downtown MHC folks have asked us to be part of! We have lots of decorating to do, shirts to fold and merchandise to price -- and most importantly, wonderful people to talk to about all our plans for Waterfowl Weekend "at the end of the road" and the museum's progress toward reopening in the spring!

ALL OF YOU know how important volunteers have always been to our work and now that's even more true. We need your help, encouragement and support!

Message me here, or give Deb a call (728-1500) and let us know you're coming! This is going to be the best Core Sound Christmas ever ... no matter what.
