Artist highlight! The exhibition Portals and Passages features two new works by artist Ashley Raye Harris: “What is in a Colour?” and “Reflecting the Surface of Memory.” Both works draw on histories of dark glass: its formulation and its early uses as a reflective surface. In one work, Harris explores the naming of color formulas in early 20th century recipe books such as “Flesh Coloured Glass,” “Opaque Leather Brown,” or “Opaque Deer Brown.” Harris creates her own nameless sheets of glass that trouble such systems of categorization through material experimentation and responsive naming.

The installation “Reflecting the Surface of Memory” presents mirror-like objects alongside a landscape of handprints, linking gesture and memory. In this way, Harris positions glass as a performative material shaped by collaboration between artist, audience, and space.

Join us at the closing reception for Portals and Passages on Saturday, November 7 from 4-5:30pm. This reception is open to the public and coincides with the ending of the symposium.

As we attempt to digest the loss of our dear friend, Paul Stankard, it is hard to imagine a WheatonArts without his earthly presence. Paul has been a member of our Wheaton family for decades, and shared his soulfulness through his work and ever-generous spirit, with our community, our public audiences, and artists from around the world. We will continue to honor his legacy, which reaches far beyond the excellence of his work.

We were honored to celebrate Paul’s 80th birthday at Wheaton a few years ago. A message sent by curator and author, Ulysses Dietz, expresses our shared appreciation and respect for the balance Paul achieved in his life.

"Paul Stankard is, in my opinion, the greatest flamework glass artist in the western hemisphere—and one of the top flameworkers in the world. He’s also one of the nicest people I’ve ever had the privilege to know, and has lived his life with an open-hearted personal integrity that sets him apart."

We send Pat and the rest of the Stankard family our condolences and love.

Artist highlight! Alex Wenstrup’s multi-material artworks draw visual references to historically-situated maps of the earth and models of the universe. An AuthaGraph projection, for example, means to render the globe in two-dimensions while preserving the size and shape of land and ocean. Wenstrup presents this map at a skewed perspective—a reminder of how easily small shifts can distort geographic knowledge. Glass and maps have long been tools working in tandem for the governance of land and people. The early modern Dutch spyglass was first a tool for terrestrial surveillance before Galileo turned it upward to observe the sun and moon. On a dark pane, Wenstrup presents the faint shadow of the geocentric model of the universe that Copernicus and Galileo disproved. The rings of the geocentric model echo two of his other works, an image of a bird and a lighthouse along a horizon, both of which engage ideas on navigation and circular motion. Wenstrup’s artworks highlight the difficulty of imagining and visualizing distant or vast spaces from the bird in the cupola of a church to the surface of the earth. Utilizing the optical properties of glass, he provides new windows of entry into terrain we may think we already know. Even when presented cleanly bound, the familiar may be faint or lost.
