Our next Movie Club will discuss Sands of Iwo Jima (1949) starring John Wayne on October 24 at 1 PM inside our Visitors Center. Kirk Douglas was initially considered for the role of Sgt. Stryker. In fact, John Wayne turned down the role at first because he felt he was too old and the American public had enough war films. Director Allan Dwan was able to convince him to sign on.

The movie was nominated for multiple Academy Awards including Best Actor for John Wayne and other major technical awards.

You are required to watch the movie so you can arrive on time ready to discuss! You can stream Sands of Iwo Jima (1949) on Pluto TV for free and other major platforms like Amazon Prime Video, MGM+, YouTube/YouTube TV, Sling TV with a Subscription or rent from the Google Play store, Fandango, or Apple TV for $3.99.

‼️TODAY‼️Is a big day! We have our Homeschool Day from 10 AM-3 PM & our Third Thursday Reading Program at 5:30 PM.

Homeschool Day will have the stations from our school tours set up along with booths from organizations across Midland for the groups to engage with throughout the event.

Third Thursday features Guest Reader Danna Lizalde reading our Featured Book The Pumpkin Thief by Alice Hemming. Kids receive a free copy of the featured book and get to participate in fun activity at the end of the program.

Hopefully, you don't suffer from coulrophobia, fear of clowns. Wobbly toys like this have a long history. During the Ming Dynasty in China, they were called bu dǎo wēng, which translates to "old man who cannot be knocked over." Many of them were in the image of clownish mandarins to mock the inefficiency and ineptitude of the bureaucrats.
Japan had Okiagari-koboshi. This translates to "take a spill, get up, and arise." These date back at least to the 14th century and symbolize resilience and good luck.
Russia had van'ka-vstan'ka, or "Ivan-get-up." These emerged in Russian folk tradition and mass production during the 20th century using metal weights inside bright plastic bodies.
In our own lifetime, Playskool came out with the Weebles in 1971 with the legendary tagline, "Weebles wobble, but they don't fall down."
You can find this clown in the playroom near the living room in the Bush Family Home.
