Dahlia Dinalhaven Makes A Dory Deal, Charles Wysocki tells a complete story with one picture. We may not know the reason this well-dressed lady, with her handsome horse and buggy waiting nearby, needs a dory. However, we know she struck a sound deal and in strict Yankee fashion, shook hands on it.

Charles Wysocki's inspirations quite often come from his frequent trips, on business or pleasure, around New England. "I saw this small boat shop and wood pile," he said of one such trip, "while they were loading a newly constructed dory on to a wheeled carrier. It was such a charming dell with trees in bud, ready to blossom." How fortunate we are that he created this amusing story from one quick look out a bus window in Bath, Maine!

Nothing warms the heart like watching a dog romp in the snow. This image continues John's informal series of prints (most sold out at the publisher) that celebrate the special bond between dogs and people. John's models for those portraits have been his own dogs in the familiar company of friends and neighbors. The model for Cold Nose, Warm Heart is Maggie, the artist's yellow Lab, whom you may remember from the popular release New Friends. Maggie is definitely bonding with someone here--someone who's missing a red scarf!

Commonly associated with the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara, bull boats were necessary to cross rivers in the West. They transported loads of meat and firewood up and down rivers. These light vessels could drift as much as a mile during the crossing! Hair side facing out helped keep boats from spinning, and a tail served as an attachment point for towing. Weighing as little as thirty pounds and made from the hide of bison, they replaced canoes west of Grand Portage in a landscape where birch was scarce. A willow frame covered with fresh hide could be built in a day. The paddles were made from cottonwood, sometimes with a bison shoulder blade. Bull boats need to dry out periodically to prevent them from becoming waterlogged. nps

"This painting depicts some timber wolves coming out from the cover at the shore of a lake right around dusk. I've actually had the reference and the idea for this painting for a while. It was just a matter of putting the animals and the location together.

"The whole idea of the piece was to set up the wolves in a situation that would accentuate the backlighting. That is why I went to Killarney National Park. I wanted something dramatic with a cliff or a ridge behind the wolves and I knew the park had a lot of great cliffs.

"I studied wolves at a compound in Nova Scotia. The best thing about this compound is that they let me go right into the animal areas. I'm able to sit on the ground and the wolves come right up to me. Now that's an eerie feeling."BT
