What can a carpet tell us about history? A lot, actually.

One of the most important textiles in Vizcaya's collection is an admiral carpet woven in Spain more than 500 years ago. Through its symbols, craftsmanship, and documented provenance, this extraordinary object helps connect us to the people, places, and traditions that shaped its journey.

Acquired by James Deering in 1915 for the Living Room, this remarkable admiral carpet dates to the 14th or 15th century and bears the coats of arms of its original patrons, Fadrique Enríquez de Mendoza and Marina de Ayala, along with the emblem of the prestigious Order of the Banda.

This Archives Month, we're celebrating the objects, stories, and research that help us understand their journeys across generations.

¿Qué puede contarnos una alfombra sobre la historia? Mucho más de lo que imaginas.

Uno de los textiles más importantes de la colección de Vizcaya es una alfombra del Almirante tejida en España hace más de 500 años. A través de sus símbolos, su artesanía y su historia documentada, este extraordinario objeto nos conecta con las personas, los lugares y las tradiciones que marcaron su recorrido a lo largo de los siglos.

Adquirida por James Deering en 1915 para la Sala de Estar, esta notable alfombra data de los siglos XIV o XV y luce los escudos de armas de sus patronos originales, Fadrique Enríquez de Mendoza y Marina de Ayala, así como el emblema de la prestigiosa Orden de la Banda.
