Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a National Historic Landmark that preserves its cultural and environmental resources to engage people in connecting with the past, understanding the present and shaping the future. Built between 1914 and 1922 as the winter home of farming manufacturer James Deering, Vizcaya is one of the most intact remaining examples from this era in United States history, when the n

ation’s most successful entrepreneurs built estates inspired by the stately homes of Europe. Vizcaya features a Main House filled with a decorative art collection, 10 acres of formal gardens, a rockland hammock (native forest), mangrove shore, and a historic village that is being restored to tell Vizcaya’s full story and provide additional spaces for programs and community outreach, including those on agriculture. Vizcaya has been a community hub since it opened to the public in 1953; it welcomes about 300,000 visitors annually.

Did you know that Vizcaya's stunning skylight wasn’t part of the Main House’s original design? 🤔

When Vizcaya was built, the central courtyard was intentionally left open to promote airflow and help naturally cool the house during Miami’s hot summers, as you can see in the 1917 Architectural Review photograph.

The skylight wasn’t added until the 1980s, when it was installed as a conservation measure to help protect the historic interiors from weather-related damage. Today, the skylight features an updated and reinforced design that balances preservation with beauty.

But the skylight isn’t the only thing that has changed over the last century. Can you spot any other differences between the Courtyard then and now? 👀

Cuando se construyó Vizcaya, el patio central se dejó intencionalmente abierto para promover la circulación del aire y ayudar a refrescar la casa de forma natural durante los calurosos veranos de Miami, como puede verse en esta fotografía publicada por Architectural Review en 1917.

How do you care for a historic object that's been on public display for years? 🖌️

Assistant Conservator Ella Andrews () is currently treating a historic gilt tripod table located in the Enclosed Loggia, where years of visitor interaction and environmental fluctuations have caused areas of the painted and gilded surface to flake.

To help conserve the piece, Ella is carefully cleaning the surface with soft brushes and conservation-safe solvents while stabilizing delicate areas with reversible materials designed to prevent further damage.

The treatment also helps visitors better understand what the piece may have originally looked like while still preserving its layered history.

If you spot Ella working in the Enclosed Loggia during your visit, feel free to stop by and ask questions to learn more about conservation.

Sheltered beneath large banyan trees, Vizcaya Village is an extension of Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, located on the west side of the historic campus.

This historic Village was part of the original 1916 estate and included more than a dozen buildings designed to make Vizcaya virtually self-sufficient. More than 100 years later, we continue to honor the Village’s agricultural roots through the Vizcaya Village Farmers Market.

Held every Sunday starting at 9:30 a.m., this free weekly market invites visitors to explore fresh-made delicacies, artisanal goods, $5 wellness classes, fresh fruits and vegetables, vegan products, and more! 🧺👩‍🌾🥕

Make the most of Memorial Day weekend with a visit to Vizcaya!

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful garden stroll, waterfront views, or a chance to step into Miami history, we’re open all Memorial Day weekend from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

As part of the Blue Star Museums program, Vizcaya is proud to honor those who serve with FREE admission to active-duty United States military personnel and their families through September 7. Eligible guests may receive admission for up to six total guests.

Vizcaya also offers FREE admission to U.S. veterans year-round, as well as 50% off Vizcaya memberships for both veterans and active-duty military members.
