In this part of his remarks, our chairman Marcell Felipe reflects on the Cuban community that came to the United States shaped by exile, but never left behind its fight for freedom.

He noted that many Cubans rebuilt their lives, raised families, and created businesses, while holding on to a clear memory of what it meant to live under communism. In his view, that experience still carries a responsibility today: to educate, debate, and defend the ideas that sustain a free society.

He also stressed that the passage of time should not become an excuse for forgetting, and that confronting these ideas requires preparation, memory, and engagement.

The fight for freedom also means remembering why that fight became necessary in the first place.

In his remarks, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier highlighted Marcell Felipe’s role in helping bring the Brothers to the Rescue case back into focus.

Uthmeier recalled that Marcell approached him and spoke about the families who had been waiting for justice for years, asking whether there was still something that could be done. From that conversation, he explained, the case was reviewed, reopened, and later coordinated with federal authorities.

“The families have waited too long. Florida has waited too long. Today, the waiting is over.”

For the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora, this moment also shows the importance of perseverance when a cause is worth pursuing. As our President, Marcell Felipe, has shown, continuing to push, asking the right questions, and keeping memory alive can help open new paths toward justice.

Today, during the press conference on the arrest warrant for Raúl Castro, our President Marcell Felipe focused his remarks on the memory of the four Brothers to the Rescue members killed in 1996 and on what their sacrifice continues to represent for the Cuban community.

He does not see them simply as victims, but as heroes who understood the risks of their mission and chose to act anyway. “I don’t consider them victims. I consider them heroes.”

He also connected their legacy to the thousands of Cubans who have faced prison, persecution, and repression for refusing to give up their beliefs, their faith, and their freedom. “They would rather die standing than live on their knees before a communist regime.”

He recognized Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier for his leadership in pursuing this legal action, stressing that the moment goes beyond a single case: it is about memory, accountability, and the pursuit of justice decades later.

A Miami judge signed an arrest warrant for Raúl Castro over his alleged role in a conspiracy to commit first-degree murder connected to the 1996 shootdown of two civilian Brothers to the Rescue planes.

The warrant was approved following an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which found sufficient grounds to move forward with the state criminal case.

This would be the second arrest warrant issued for Raúl Castro in connection with the case. In May 2026, federal authorities had already brought murder and conspiracy charges. The state investigation is seeking to establish Castro’s responsibility as the head of Cuba’s Armed Forces at the time of the attack.

Havana Syndrome is raising new questions again in 2026.

In this clip, our Executive Director Miguel Cossio speaks with Oriana Zill de Granados, co-author of El Síndrome de La Habana, about new developments that are reopening the debate around these incidents:

- New attacks reported in 2026, including one from just a month ago.
- According to the investigation, the CIA may have evidence pointing toward Russia.
- Moscow continues to develop directed-energy weapons, a technology that has resurfaced in discussions surrounding the case.
- The authors question the U.S. government’s approach and sum it up this way: “We found nothing; therefore, there is nothing.”
- The interview examines the possible presence of Russian military intelligence in Cuba during the first incidents in 2016.
- It also explores the hypothesis that a faction of Cuban intelligence may have been involved.

Who was really behind these incidents, and what do we know today that we didn’t know in 2016?

“The US and Cuba are 90 miles apart. They have always been and they always will be.” Marcell Felipe explains why Cuba remains the No. 1 national security threat to the United States. “You don’t have that threat from Canada or Mexico.”
