Jimmie Lee Jackson was shot by an Alabama State Trooper inside Mack's Café. The cafe was located just behind the Zion United Methodist Church (sometimes historically referred to as Zion Chapel Methodist Church) in downtown Marion, Alabama.
The shooting happened on the evening of February 18, 1965. During a nighttime voting rights protest, state troopers attacked the demonstrators, causing Jackson, his mother, and his 82-year-old grandfather to flee and seek shelter in Mack's Café.
Troopers followed them into the building, where Jackson was shot in the stomach after trying to shield his mother and grandfather from being beaten. He died eight days later at a local hospital.
