The Artist’s Grind with Kortland Whalum

An honest conversation about building and sustaining a life as a working artist. Drawing from his experience as both a touring musician and actor, Kortland Whalum will share insights into the realities of creative work — from life on the road to navigating the business of performance.

This session will explore the mental, physical, and financial challenges artists face, along with the discipline required to stay inspired and continue growing over time. Designed for emerging and mid-career creatives, this is a candid look at what it really takes to build a sustainable career in the arts.

In collaboration with Crosstown Arts Film Series, MLL co-presents Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson. The film brings to life the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival—six weeks of free concerts that drew more than 300,000 people and featured performances from legends like Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, and Sly and the Family Stone.

For decades, over 40 hours of footage from the festival sat largely unseen—until this film finally brought it back into the light, where it belongs. Since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2021, the film has received widespread acclaim, winning both the U.S. Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for Documentary.

We’re especially excited to welcome the film’s producer, Joseph Patel, who will be here in person for a post-screening conversation with IMAKEMADBEATS—a chance to go deeper into the story behind the film and the cultural moment it captures.

Summer of Soul hits the screen at The Crosstown Theater.
The official kickoff to Record Exchange Weekend 2026.

Presented as part of the Crosstown Arts Film Series, co-hosted by Memphis Listening Lab, at the Crosstown Theater.

A powerful look at a moment in music and culture that didn’t get its due—until now.

And we’re not just screening it—producer Joseph Patel will be in Memphis for a post-film conversation with IMAKEMADBEATS.

Join us Thursday night as we kick off Record Exchange weekend.

Part film, part time capsule, part reminder of what gets overlooked—and what doesn’t.

Come through.
