🇺🇸 AMERICA 250 SPOTLIGHT: The Battle Comes Home | Part 2

In Part 1, we explored the Battle of Long Island and the events that unfolded in August 1776.
But the Revolutionary War wasn’t just being fought on the battlefields. Its effects reached right here into the Massapequas.

The Jones family, one of the most prominent families in the Massapequas, was predominantly Loyalist, supporting the British Crown during the Revolution.

🏛️ Tryon Hall, built by David Jones in 1770, became associated with the local Loyalist community. The home was named for William Tryon, New York’s Royal Governor, and stood as a reminder of the strong British influence that existed on Long Island before and during the Revolution.

Thomas Jones, a prominent member of the family and a staunch Loyalist, faced serious consequences for his political beliefs. His property was eventually confiscated, and he ultimately left for England following the Revolution.

🇺🇸 The Battle of Long Island may have been fought miles away, but the Revolution changed life here in the Massapequas, too.

As we celebrate America 250, we’re shining a spotlight on the people, places, and stories that connect our own community to the birth of our nation.

🇺🇸 AMERICA 250 SPOTLIGHT: The Battle of Long Island | Part 1

On August 27, 1776, one of the most important battles of the American Revolution was fought right here on Long Island.

Also known as the Battle of Brooklyn, it was the largest battle of the Revolutionary War, involving approximately 30,000 British and American troops.

British General William Howe launched a massive attack against General George Washington’s Continental Army. British forces outflanked the Americans, forcing Washington’s army back toward Brooklyn Heights.

The battle was a British victory, and Washington’s army found itself trapped with the East River at its back. But Washington refused to surrender.

Under the cover of darkness on August 29–30, approximately 9,000 Continental soldiers were evacuated across the East River to Manhattan. This daring retreat saved Washington’s army and allowed the Revolution to continue.

🇺🇸 But what did the Battle of Long Island mean for the people living here in the Massapequas?

The Revolution wasn’t happening somewhere far away—it was happening right here on Long Island and affecting local families and communities.

Our summer Historical Tour wouldn’t have been the same without the help and enthusiasm of our interns! Today, we want to give a special thank you to two more of our amazing summer interns, Sean McEvoy and Rayyan Faran! 👏

🎓 Sean McEvoy
A 2026 Massapequa High School graduate heading to SUNY Albany, Sean is an avid historical reenactor across Long Island and recently earned his Eagle Scout Award. His passion for history made him a wonderful addition to our tours!

🌟 Rayyan Faran
A senior at Half Hollow Hills, Rayyan is a member of the NYS Service Learner Cohort with NYS Parks & Trails, a ReWind LI Student Leader and Mentor, and an America Computer Science League Finalist. We were thrilled to have his energy, leadership, and talents with us this summer!

We are so grateful to both Sean and Rayyan for sharing their time, talents, and enthusiasm with the Historical Society of the Massapequas. We hope you enjoyed your summer with us as much as we enjoyed having you! ❤️

Lights, Camera, Massapequa!

Did you know that Massapequa once had several movie theaters—and even a drive-in?

🎬 Massapequa Drive-In — 1952–1972
Located behind the Massapequa Zoo, the drive-in offered double features under the stars. Families could watch movies from the comfort of their cars!

🎥 Bar Harbour Theater — approx. 1960–1980
Located on the second floor of Bar Harbour Shopping Center, today's Southgate Shopping Center, it was the first indoor movie theater in the Massapequas.

🎥 Pequa Theater — c. 1960–1988
Located on Sunrise Highway, the Pequa featured a distinctive glass lobby, high ceilings, and excellent sight lines and acoustics.

🎞️ North Massapequa Theater
This neighborhood theater opened in 1960 at the shopping center near Jerusalem Avenue and Hicksville Road and operated into the late 1970s.

🎬 Jerry Lewis Theater — 1972–1980
Built on the former drive-in site, this small theater opened with Love at First Bite. It was part of comedian Jerry Lewis's nationwide theater chain.

🍿 Sunrise Mall Theaters
As multiplexes became popular, Sunrise Mall joined the trend, eventually offering seven screens for moviegoers.

For generations, going to the movies was more than just seeing a film—it was a night out, a family tradition, and a chance to make memories.
