The is another panel story in the Bourne Historical Society building part of our Cape Cod Commandos display. It is about the 411th after it left Camp Edwards. On the 21st of January the Americal belatedly joins the fight to liberate the Philippines on Leyte. The J*panese were in retreat towards the Island of Cebu.
The fight became a slaughter. There are many mentions in memoirs of an unofficial order to cease taking J*p prisoners. The Americal spent less than two months on Leyte but killed 3500 of the enemy. The Philippines was a different type of fighting with open fields and human habitation. The men then had to prepare for a first for them, a landing on a hostile shore.
