Welcome back to the Frederic Baraga Walking Tour! We've walked four minutes up the road from the Cathedral and are standing across the street from the Baraga Museum! Welcome to the historic home of Bishop Baraga! The Baraga house was built in 1857 as the first church in Marquette, MI. After the completion of the first Cathedral in 1866, it became the home of Bishop Frederic Baraga until his death in 1868. The house was moved twice before landing at its current location in 1872. In 2017, the “Baraga House” was renovated and transformed into the Frederic Baraga Museum.

Today, the center is open to the public as a museum and educational center, preserving one of the oldest buildings in Marquette County. Showcased are artifacts and tools used by Bishop Baraga during his ministry that tell the story of the man, the priest, and the Bishop as he ministered throughout the Great Lakes region. Visit us this summer season- we're open 12:00-5:00pm Monday-Friday! Family friendly and FREE to the public.

Join us for a Day of Reflection held on Saturday, September 12, 2026 from noon to 4:00 pm located at St. Joseph and St. Patrick Parish in Escanaba, MI. This is an opportunity to gather, celebrate and dive deeper into the life and labors of Bishop Baraga! Topics include: Bishop Baraga’s ministry; his use of the Two Roads Pictorial Scroll to teach catechism, and the Cause for Canonization process and Bishop Baraga’s Journey towards Sainthood. Welcome back to the Frederic Baraga Walking Tour. Next stop is the Baraga Chapel that is attached to St. Peter Cathedral! After his passing, Bishop Baraga’s precious remains were placed in a plain, pine coffin and interred under the Cathedral in a specially-made crypt near the Blessed Virgin altar. In 1897, a crypt with six niches was built in the southwest corner of the new sandstone Cathedral after the first fire in 1879. Bishop Baraga’s body was lifted into a steel casket and placed in the lower tier at the southeast corner of the crypt. When the second fire destroyed the Cathedral in 1935, a Bishop’s Chapel was added to the restored Cathedral. A decision was made at this time to excavate the space under the chapel and build a crypt there. A distinct place of honor was reserved for the body of Bishop Baraga. The remains of Bishops Mrak, Vertin, Eis, Magner, and Noa lie in the crypt.

After Bishop Baraga was declared venerable in 2012, an above-ground chapel was built off the south-east side of the Cathedral, known as the Baraga Chapel. This chapel is the final resting place of Venerable Bishop Baraga. Inside you can find a marble sarcophagus in which he is laid to rest, stained glass windows depicting his life and labors, prayer cards, and a place for prayer intentions. This chapel is open and free to the public.

Oh the difference 8 years can make! 8 years ago today, the Bishop Baraga Association opened the doors to our museum with a blessing from Bishop John F. Doerfler of the Diocese of Marquette, MI. The following spring, we broke ground on what is now known as the Prayer Gardens located on the grounds of our museum. In ways it feels like just yesterday we were ordering archival cases, and spray painting our rosary path in the garden so that we could fully visualize it. There's been a lot of long days and even longer nights as we travel to give educational presentations, open our doors for extended hours and continuously work on Bishop Frederic Baraga's Cause for Canonization. Honestly, we wouldn't have it any other way!

Regardless, we have a lot of people to thank. Thank you to all of you who gave what you could in financial gifts, prayers, volunteer hours and support. Thank you to all of you who have visited our museum, walked our prayer gardens and visited Bishop Frederic Baraga in the Baraga Chapel.

It's a special place to us, not only because of its historical significance, but also in the sentimental significance we now share with our forever Friends of Bishop Baraga! Here's to 8 years!
