Join us as author and historian Dr. Melissa DeVelvis discusses her groundbreaking book, "Gendering Secession," which pulls back the curtain on the lives and politics of elite southern women during the months leading up to the American Civil War. Far from passive bystanders, these women were astute political observers who filtered their ideas through socially acceptable avenues - using religious metaphors, historical comparisons, and popular literature to process the nation's fracture and share deep-seated anxieties their male counterparts could not - or would not - express. ​Space is limited. Exciting news! We are happy to announce that Alexandra DeLuca Berisford has joined Cobb Landmarks as our new Program Coordinator. Alexandra loves to design engaging, educational programs that foster meaningful community connections. She holds a B.A. in History of Art & Architecture from UC Santa Barbara, with a focus on architectural history, American art, and museum studies. Outside of Cobb Landmarks, Alexandra is deeply involved in local history—serving on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Genealogical Society, the City of Kennesaw Historic Preservation Commission, as the Museum and Collection Assistant at the Cherokee County History Center, and as a volunteer archivist for the Save Acworth History Foundation. When she isn't working, she enjoys collecting and trading vintage items. Be sure to say "hi" the next time you see her!

How it started vs. how it's going! It's crazy to think that this year marks our 10th Annual Root House Harvest Dinner! What started as a small affair has grown into such a fun celebration of local food, history, and community! We are happy to share that the Power-Jackson Cabin has returned to Cobb County for reconstruction! The Power-Jackson Cabin is a rare single-pen log house which originally stood along Post Oak Tritt Road. The cabin had been neglected and was facing the threat of site development. Cobb Landmarks advocated for the Power-Jackson Cabin's preservation. Our efforts included meeting with Cobb County Commissioners, speaking at Cobb County Planning Commission Zoning Hearings, and securing an expert evaluation of the cabin.

After acquiring the cabin from the property owner, Cobb Landmarks and Cobb County PARKS reached an agreement in 2023 to relocate the cabin to Hyde Farm Park. On April 9, 2024, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved the use of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds to reconstruct the cabin at Hyde Farm Park.

To ensure the cabin is restored with the highest level of craftsmanship and historical accuracy, the logs were temporarily relocated to Tennessee. There, the experts at Leatherwood, Inc. conducted a comprehensive assessment of the structure. During this specialized process, each log will was inspected to determine which original timbers and boards remained sound and which pieces required careful replacement due to weathering and deterioration. This meticulous review was essential for the long-term stability of what could be the oldest existing structure in Cobb County. Now that Leatherwood has completed the restoration of the individual components, the cabin has return to Hyde Farm Park for reconstruction.

We look forward to seeing this rare piece of Georgia history standing alongside the other two historic Power family cabins located at Hyde Farm. Stay tuned for more updates!
